From Sustainability Program, you can refer to Sustainability Explorer content a metric's values align with — such as framework disclosures or questionnaire questions — in Related Explorer content.
While Sustainability Explorer automatically updates content when providers publish new versions, you may need to update your metrics' Related Explorer content to refer to the latest versions. Rather than edit each metric individually, you can work with Workiva to update — or roll forward — your metrics' references to new versions of:
- CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project)
- S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA)
- Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
- Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)
- United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG)
Step 1. Set up the roll forward with Workiva
To roll forward your metrics' references to content in Sustainability Explorer, Workiva will need:
- The ID and secret of an API grant, created in the workspace
Note: Organization Admins and Workspace Owners can create API grants from Workspace Settings. At a minimum, the grant requires file:write and file:read scopes.
- The ID of the Program with the metrics to update
Tip: When you open a Program, its ID appears after
esg_program/in your browser's address bar. - Which content and version to update metrics to, such as the current or pending version of S&P Global CSA
When you identify the Program and content to update, contact your Workiva CSM to schedule the roll forward. During the roll forward, Workiva will update each metric's Related Explorer content references to the desired version.
Note: Workiva rolls forward each metric's Related Explorer content references only one version at a time. If content updates frequently or has multiple versions, you may need to request that Workiva perform the roll forward repeatedly to update your metrics to the desired version.
Step 2. Review what changed
After Workiva performs the roll forward, your metrics' references to the content — in Related Explorer content — will be updated to the next available version. Workiva also provides a Related Explorer content roll forward report to help summarize changes, similar to a change log. Review this report to identify how your metrics' references to the content changed and any recommended next steps.
Note: You may need to request access to view the Related Explorer content roll forward report; by default, only Workspace Owners and the workspace member associated with the API grant have permission to it.
| Change | Description | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Content now a separate disclosure | The metric previously referenced an item within a disclosure that now appears as a disclosure itself in the new version. | Review the new version of the content, and — if necessary — edit the metric's Related Explorer content to refer to specific items within the new disclosure. |
| Content now item within disclosure | The metric previously referenced a disclosure that now appears as an item within another disclosure in the new version. | Review the new version of the content, and — if necessary — edit the metric's Related Explorer content to refer to the new disclosure or another item within it. |
| Multiple disclosures consolidated | The metric previously referenced multiple disclosures or items now represented by the same disclosure in the new version. | Review the new version of the content, and create or remove metric values for the reporting period — if necessary — based on the consolidation. |
| Content now multiple disclosures | The metric previously referenced a disclosure or item now represented by multiple disclosures in the new version. | Review the new version of the content, and edit the metric's Related Explorer content to remove any references no longer needed. |
| Content removed | The metric previously referenced content that no longer appears in the new version. | Review the metric to determine whether to continue its data collection for the reporting period, such as if it no longer supports a disclosure. |
| New content | The new version introduced a new disclosure. | Review the new version of the content, and decide whether to add the disclosure to Related Explorer content of a new or existing metric. |
| Granular reference updated | The metric previously referenced a granular item within content that now has broader updates in the new version. | Review the new version of the content, and edit the metric's Related Explorer content to refer to the disclosure or its other items as necessary. |
| Overarching reference updated | The metric previously referenced content that contains disclosures with changes in the new version. | To ensure compliance, edit the metric's Related Explorer content to align with related disclosures — or items within disclosures — instead of the overarching reference. |
| Content expanded to additional industries | The new version now applies content to additional industries. | If a metric that aligns with similar content already exists, edit its Related Explorer content to refer to this content. Otherwise, create a new metric to collect values for this content. |
| Related content still deprecated | The new version may affect metric based on its related content. | Review the new version, and edit the metric's Related Explorer content if necessary. |
| Related content not yet supported | Sustainability Explorer has only one version of the content, or multiple versions not yet supported for roll-forward. | For assistance, contact your Workiva CSM. |
Step 3. Update metrics as necessary
When Workiva performs the roll forward, it updates only references in your metrics' Related Explorer content. You may need to make additional edits to your Program based on the new version of the content or the Related Explorer content roll forward report. For example:
- Edit your metrics' Related Explorer content, such as to remove unnecessary references or add references to new disclosures or items within them.
- Remove metric values if their data collection is no longer needed.
- Create new metrics, such as for new disclosures or to collect new units of measurement.
