The Workiva solution for Netherlands XBRL filings offers several features to simplify filing in the Netherlands.
- XBRL-enabled Spreadsheet: No XBRL expertise is necessary — fill in the XBRL-enabled sheets with the correct financial and narrative data and the XBRL is automatically applied to the correct cells.
- Narrative Text Blocks: Reduce repetitive data entry tasks by connecting narrative disclosures from the Annual Report to the XBRL-enabled spreadsheet.
- XBRL Data Model: Increase efficiencies and reduce risk by automatically populating financial data from the trial balance and chart of accounts by applying Workiva’s XBRL Data Model to the GSR spreadsheet.
- Taxonomy & Regulator-Defined Validations: Improved visibility into potential filing problems by surfacing validation errors within the Workiva platform.
- Generate XBRL & Submit Direct Filings: Reduce dependency on disparate solutions by generating XBRL and submitting test and live filings from the Workiva platform.
Spreadsheet setup
To begin, you’ll first need to import a Global Statutory Reporting spreadsheet template. Reach out to your Customer Success Manager to obtain this template and get help setting up the template.
After importing the template spreadsheet, you'll need to create an XBRL profile for the spreadsheet in order to use functions like XBRL generation, XBRL validations, and narrative text blocks. Filings for the Netherlands should create profiles using the KvK taxonomy. For detailed information on creating and managing XBRL profiles, see Manage XBRL profiles.
Next, open the template to the Spreadsheet and Document Configuration section. This section contains information which will be used throughout the document, such as dates and currencies. Ensure that all sections are complete and filled out according to your company's needs.
Populate your document
When your document defaults and other reference information have been set up, you are ready to populate your document with content.
First expand the XBRL Template section of the spreadsheet. In the outline, you can see a symbol next to some sections indicating that the section is in Input Mode, which restricts editing of the section to specific cells. While the section is in Input Mode, you will only be able to modify cells with a dark blue background.
If the information you'd like to use exists in other Workiva documents, you can use several different methods to use the data in those documents in this spreadsheet as well.
- You can use formulas to refer to cells in other tables or spreadsheets, directly referencing other documents.
- Narrative text blocks can be used to enter blocks of text from another document that you use multiple times. To create a narrative text block, highlight a section of text, then right-click and choose Create Narrative Text Block. This text block can then be inserted into documents which use the same profile in which the narrative text block was created.
- You can also choose to enter your spreadsheet information manually, by typing into cells directly, copying and pasting information from another source, or by linking information to the spreadsheet.
If there are errors in the displayed value but the underlying value is correct, you may need to correct the accuracies in your document. Right-click the section in the outline and disable input mode, change the display accuracy, then right-click the section in the outline and re-enable input mode. For more information on setting accuracies, see Select fact units and accuracies.
Generate and review XBRL
Once you’ve entered all your information, click Generate XBRL in the toolbar to generate your filing documents. After generating XBRL, open the XBRL document generations panel to see a list of issues that may cause problems when filing in the left panel.
You can see the full details of all validation issues by clicking Validations in the toolbar. Validation issues generally fall into 3 categories:
- Informational: Marked with a blue icon, these messages inform you of an issue that was detected but will not cause any issue when filing.
- Warning: Using a yellow icon, validation warnings inform you of issues that will not stop or suspend your filing, but may warrant further review.
- Error: Red icons indicate an issue which will cause a filing error, resulting in a suspended filing or other problem. These normally require some action to resolve and may or may not be linked to a location in the document.
Address these issues then regenerate your document, as multiple issues may be related to the same problem. Continue resolving issues and regenerating your document until all issues have been addressed.
Submit your filing
Once you’ve finished addressing all validation errors, generate a final time to ensure there are no remaining unaddressed issues. When there are no remaining unaddressed issues, you are ready to submit your filing to your regulator. For more information on creating and submitting a filing, see Intro to filing.
