Data Movement Using Connections
Now that you have your data in the Data Management Suite, it's time to start using it!
Some common ways you may want to use your data:
- Populating a Spreadsheet with Query Results
- Generating a Table to focus on specific Costs / Expenses
- Generating a Chart in a Presentation
On the other hand, there are times when data is stored or maintained in a Spreadsheet for any number of reasons and we need to send it over to the Data Management Suite.
Some common examples of that:
- Currency Exchange Rates
- Top-level Adjustment Data
- HR Demographic Data
To send data from a Workiva spreadsheet over to a Wdata Table, set up an Outgoing Connection to allow data centralization while still providing the flexibility of a spreadsheet for data gathering.
Other things to keep in mind:
That two-million-cell spreadsheet threshold can come up faster than you think so add parameters to your query to help focus your data pull and keep within that threshold.
If you're already using Chains to upload your data to a Wdata table, use the Workiva connector to auto-refresh your connection with the List Connections and the Refresh Connections commands.
Managing multiples?
- Explore using a command group to cycle through a list of connections
- Use the Batch Refresh Connections command to refresh multiple connections at the same time
