  Hi Kelly and welcome to Community! Happy to have you!

  Let's first make sure that you are an editor and not a viewer on the document that you can't change the font color on. I have included a help article here that will show you the ability of each role. In order to change your role within permissions, an owner of the document will need to make the change.  I have also included a screenshot showing where you can change permissions within the document.
