Best Practices for Visio Diagram Slide Size when importing into Workiva
Hello Community -
Our team is exploring best practices for importing Visio process maps into Workiva. We’re looking to streamline how we document, manage, and report our control procedures in one collaborative workspace.
Currently, we use a widescreen (13.33” x 7.5”) layout for most BAU governance presentations. However, when bringing Visio diagrams into Workiva, a custom slide size is often generated to fit larger process maps. This leads to inconsistencies across presentations, and we’d like to standardize the format if possible.
What I’m hoping to learn:
• What slide size/layout works best when importing Visio diagrams into Workiva?
• Are teams using a standard format to maintain consistency across process map visual presentations?
• Any tips for optimizing flowcharts, org charts, or process maps in Workiva?
If anyone has guidance or examples on how they’re approaching this, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Hello Chuck 👋🏼- Thanks for reaching out & creating this post!
I'm excited to hear if others have anything to chime in about this topic for you! If not, here is some information that is hopefully a little helpful!
📐 Slide Size and Consistency
-
Adjustment is Key: Even if a custom size is generated upon import, you can always adjust the slide size back to your standard widescreen (13.33” x 7.5”) or another preferred size using the Layout Properties for each layout slide in the presentation.
-
Process Dictates Size: Due to the varied complexity of processes, most teams do not use a single standard slide size for all flowcharts. It's often more effective to let the complexity of the specific process map determine the optimal slide size for clarity.
💡 Tips for Optimizing Process Maps in Workiva
-
Centralization for Navigation: Customers generally find it helpful to keep all process flowcharts in a single presentation. This makes navigation and updates much easier.
-
Performance Consideration: Be mindful of presentation size. If you exceed 80-90 slides, you may start to experience performance issues. If your process maps are extensive, you may consider splitting them into multiple presentations.
-
Standardize Formatting: To maintain consistency across different slide sizes, focus on standardizing the formatting elements you use:
-
Use similar fonts and colors for titles, subtitles, and text.
-
Standardize the use of swim lanes and shapes.
-
I hope this helps your team streamline its documentation! If you have any other questions or run into specific issues, please let us know.
0Hi Brooke,
Hope you’re doing well! Just wanted to say thanks for your feedback on the best practices for our process map formatting when importing into Workiva. After thinking about this further, you're right and size will tend to vary depending on the process map size.
I specifically like your idea about centralizing all our process maps into one presentation. I need to think through how to organize this best but it is something that I'm going to keep in mind to potentially make it easier to navigate and update our maps and controls in a centralized location.
Thanks again for sharing your expertise and helping us in our project to optimize our process maps in Workiva. If we have any more questions, we’ll definitely reach out.
Thanks -
Chuck
