Exporting a document to DOCX With Comments Included
CompletatoOur auditors have given us the feedback that it would be very helpful for them to receive an export of our 10-Q/K in .docx format with comments included in the export. Currently it seems it is only possible to export a document with comments included as a pdf. Would it be possible to add this functionality to Wdesk?

Fantastic news, friends. A recent release to the Workiva platform has made available the ability to export comments to DOCX. Thanks so much for your patience and feedback along the way. We know we couldn't done it without you, so thanks again.
Give us a holler if you have any questions on this or need anything else. Cheers!
Hi Anthony!
You might have seen, but I have submitted this request onto our Product Team for further review, so we'll definitely consider it We'll keep you updated with any new developments there.
In the meantime, I wanted to add that recently Send for Review as added to next gen Documents and Presentations, which would allow you to send to your auditors. They would be able to see comments and add their own back in real-time. More info on this feature can be found here: https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039921292-Send-for-Review.
0Thanks Mike! Please keep me updated.
A follow up question I have to the new Send for Review feature in next gen Documents and Presentations: What is the difference between this functionality and simply giving someone read only access to your document so they can see all comments and add their own?
0Will do, Anthony!
Regarding your question, the main different here is with the new Send for Review functionality, these users don't actually need permission to the file at all to be sent the review, they only need to be in the Workspace. And the comments flow directly between the source file and the review and vice versa, which wasn't the case in classic.
0Hello Mike, I was curious if there was any update on this enhancement to export comments to word? Similarly, our auditors are requesting the same thing. Only our immediate auditors have access to our workspace to review files. We would prefer not to give Workspace access to review partners at the auditing firm.
2Hi Kristin!
Exporting a DOCX with Comments still remains on the radar, but there's not been any significant update to the status at this time. Definitely happy to pass along your feedback and interest to our Product Team. Thanks for sharing, and let me know what questions you have for me or if you need anything else. Cheers!
1Hi Mike, I am also following this feed as it would be very helpful to us to have the feature of exporting a DOCX with comments. Thanks!
2We would find this feature helpful also. Thanks
2Hi Team, Is it possible to extract the evidences uploaded in SOX test template along with the comments posted for that evidence?
-1Hi Pooja Mehta!
Currently it is not possible to export the evidence with comments, however, you can export all evidence with markup. We are looking into adding this functionality and I've connected your request to the team. Let me know what questions you have for me or if you need anything else.
0Quick update here: at this time work is not planned for this enhancement. We will continue to take requests for this here, so feel free to chime in and let us know and we'll share that back with our Product Team. Should that status change, we'll keep you updated. Thanks so much for your feedback and patience. Holler with any quesitons!
0Mike Thanks for the update that this functionality is not planned. Did the product team give any context as to why they wouldn't want to do this? Our team would see a substantial amount of time savings every quarter if we had the option to export with comments to Word. We currently coordinate updates of many areas of the 10Q via Word with many different departments (almost all of which we don't want to have access to the entire document or the ability to see in Wdesk) and we have to transpose comments from each version of the 10Q to the next in Word manually to keep track of any that remain open.
0Following - feature would be beneficial.
0Hi William Ames so sorry I missed your question. As far as a why, I can share that our product team who works on importer functionality is currently focuses on improving customer onboarding efforts, which has put some items like this on pause. They will likely pick this back up as their time gets freed up to pursue import requests. Definitely happy to share your thoughts with them and keep you updated on their status. Let me know if there are any questions.
I got you linked up too Karen Houston
0Hi Mike,
I would echo the comments above. Similar to Willam, being able to export comments to Word/DOCX would certainly add a significant time savings for our process given that many of our other departments do not plan to use Wdesk in the near to mid future, but still participate in the quarterly and year end reporting process.
Commenting to stay up to date on any future changes.1Hi Mike,
This feature would be really beneficial, at least for active comments.
Thank you!
1Hi Mike, we also feel this feature would be beneficial for the same reasons that William Ames and others mention above. Thanks!
0Our team would also find this feature beneficial
0Our team would also find this functionality beneficial.
0Hi Mike, this feature has been requested by a wDesk user on my team.
0Thanks for sharing that Deirdre Bates
0Quick update for ya here. First, just wanted to say thanks for your steadfast devotion and perseverance. Your input has helped move this out of purgatory and into the planned phase. I don't a timeline for when, but our product team is at least looking into adding this at some point. We'll keep you apprised of progress here but in the meantime, we'll continue to take in new requests too. Thanks again and holler with any questions. Cheers!
0Hi Mike - Adding to the thread that being able to export comments to Word/DOCX would certainly add value and save time for our team.
1Commenting to get updates on this. Exporting DOCX with comments would be extremely helpful for our team as we collaborate with other departments that do not use Workiva very frequently and it is not always best practice to export to PDF for these collaborations and incorporating comments from Workiva to exports is a heavy time drain
1+1 to this feature. We currently have one auditor rep in the Workiva workspace and they export the Review doc to the partners and other audit staff and they are more comfortable with Word instead of PDF. (The rep then adds the comments to the review document).
0Adding another vote for this feature, for all of the reasons articulated above.
0I would also find this feature extremely useful! Being able to import with comments would also be nice, but I'd prioritize the word export with comments as the most important feature to add. It would save me 50 plus hours of work per year. Do you have a timeline on when this might be available or in beta? Thanks!
0Hi Rachel,
Thanks for sharing your use case here. Sadly I don't have a precise timeline on this enhancement. It continues to grow in popularity but is up against some stiff competition as far as getting prioritized. I've added you to the list of requestors and shared your insights. I'll let you know if the status does change.
0+1 here for wanting the capability to export word document with comments included. We have to collaborate with many different teams, and don't want everyone to have access to our "primary document" in Workiva. Plus, they are usually only responsible for smaller sections that we want them to be able to edit, see our comments, etc. Would be more efficient for our team to be able to export word documents with comments embedded, as opposed to just pdf.
0Following - the ability to export a document to Word with comments and replies would fill in a big gap in our Workiva process. The current PDF export with comments does not display comments well at all. It would be more beneficial to see these comments along the margin of the document vs a small inline icon, but preference will always be a Word export.
