    Hi Peter!

In Spreadsheets every cell, blank or not, count toward your cell limit of 2 million. We recommend completely deleting out blank cells, columns or rows that you might not be using.

Let me know if there are any questions here. Our Workiva product teams are looking into use cases of needs beyond 2 million cells, and they'd be happy to connect with your CSM to go over options and your current needs.

    Hi Hugh,

For blank cell if this is newly created without input any content before, it doesn't seem to count toward the cell limit shown in spreadsheet properties as I try to add new columns, the cell count does not increase.

I also observed that blank cells, only those that active before (input with content before) will be count towards the cell count as I try to delete the content of one column, the cell count does not reduce, only when I delete the column, the cell count reduce. Is there any way we can check those active cells but without content that count towards cell limit so that we can do clean up and fully utilize the cell limit?

    Lay Hoon Yap,

Any cell matching one of the following conditions below will count towards the 2 million cells per spreadsheet limit.

    • Any cell with a value
    • Blank cells with formatting applied
    • Any cell with previous input (cell history)
Based on this, my initial thought is that the cells are deemed active due to things like cell history even though the content has been cleared. Authorship is the best approach here. Enabling it via the history panel will show the active cells. In theory, if you copied the spreadsheet that would remove those blank/active cells as well!

Hi Lay Hoon Yap, thank you a lot for your post.

Based on your explanation I was able to better understand the cell limits issue and find a workaround for it.

PD: I've realized that both "Copy and Paste" and "Workiva Sync" generates history for empty cells, even though the new data contains "empty cell" on the source too. So far, the only feasible solution I found to avoid this complication is by "Import the tab" from Excel and "Overwrite" Workiva's tab (section), this way the empty cells that remain empty do NOT generate any history and therefore do not count.
