Linking text within a cell without linking the entire cell
Hi,
I want to link the date and amount in the following cell from our single source file. When I try linking them, they don't appear as destination links. Does Workiva have the capability to link text within a cell without linking the entire cell?

If your source is a spreadsheet and you paste it to a document it should automatically create the source/destination link whereas if you are pasting into a table then you may need to click the little blue clipboard icon that appears and then select Create links from.
If you want to paste from a spreadsheet into a table cell in a document, you need to copy from the spreadsheet and then within the document table edit the cell and then paste.
If you are pasting from one document to another or within the same document, you first need to create source links before you copy and paste. It is however recommended by workiva that the source be on a spreadsheet.

If you are referring to linking within a spreadsheet then the best course of action is to use formulas to combine text with values.0
To clarify, I want to paste from a spreadsheet into another spreadsheet. The footnote I shared is located within a single cell in my spreadsheet. I was wondering if I can link the date and amount from my source spreadsheet to the text within the single cell in my destination spreadsheet without overriding the entire cell. Hope this clears up any confusion.

It did, and unfortunately, I haven't come across an answer for that.
The only thing I can think of is to use a formula to combine text within a cell with other referenced cells.

Hello and welcome to the Community, Corina! Thanks for the questions.
The good news is the answer here is yes, Workiva does allow this. It is called "sub cell linking" and you can perform this within tables of your document. Here's a Help article on the process, but essentially you can copy the value for X.XX billion from your source (CTRL+C), likely a Spreadsheet, and then activate the cell in your document where this value is found so that you see a cursor, highlight the chunk of text to link, and then paste it in (CTRL+V).
A few caveats to note here is first, you'll want to have the Shown In value for this cell to be Millions so you can display the value as 1.2. You can add the dollar sign, control the number of decimal places it shows, and the unit (billions) rom the right-hand Formats panel, like so:
Does that get what you want? I should add too that you can also link the the date of December 31, 2021 too in the same cell, and you can XBRL tag the value of $1.2 billion there too if you needed to.

Thanks for sharing the article Mike! This is the process I'm looking for but I want to perform it within a spreadsheet instead of a document. Essentially, my source is a spreadsheet and I want to sub cell link to a cell in another spreadsheet.

Unfortunately you've stumbled upon a slight road bump as sub-cell links are not supported in Spreadsheets as of yet. Here's an existing post about this same request, and as you can see, it's a popular one so rest assured you're not alone.

Mike, sure. It could be useful.
If they get it right, one thing that would be interesting is when that cell (containing sub-cell links) is copied and pasted to a document, presentation, or spreadsheet how it would be treated. Will sub cell links be preserved (if tagging is required) or will it be a single destination link as it is currently?

Quick update here. The enhancement for supporting sub-cell links in Spreadsheets has been moved to the future roadmap. I don't have a timeline as of yet, but its good news. Your perseverance has paid off.
