Move source links within spreadsheet
AnsweredHello,
We are moving a lot of source links from one location of the spreadsheet to another within the spreadsheet to streamline. I followed the direction in this article: https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/articles/360046357671-Manage-Source-Links
By using ctrl+v from the original location and then ctrl+c to the desired location. However, when I paste the link to the new location, I am not getting the option to move source link. Am I missing any steps?
Also, the original location contains a formula pull from a different tab in the spreadsheet, when I pasted the link, the new location includes the formula as well. I would like to only move the values of the original data and the source link. Is there a way to achieve that?
Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the Community, Jing!
To move a source link in a Spreadsheet, you would want to Cut (not Copy) and then Paste the link. The shortcut would be 'CTRL+X' at the original/source and then 'CRTL+V' at the new location you wish to move it to.
Does this make sense? Let me know what other questions your have, or you need any further clarification. Thanks for your contributions and chat with you soon. Cheers!0Hi Mike,
Thanks for the quick response! I was able to get it to work with your instructions. This method transfers the formulas in the original source but I don't want the formula in the new location. Can I only move the source links and just the values from the original source? Can always copy and paste value after the links are moved but want to check if there is a quicker way.
Thanks!
Jing0No problem, Jing!
Ah, I see about the formulas. Unfortunately there's not a quicker way. Cutting will also bring the formula too, but as you point out, you can get it back by pasting it back in. I can't think of a quicker way than that.
Hope that helps some. Let me know if I can answer any further questions you have. Take care in the meantime.0Hi Mike,
I have been trying to move source links from an old workbook into a next gen spreadsheet. It appears that the "create source link" after cutting and pasting is still unavailable. Is this because I am trying to move the source link to a next gen doc from a classic doc? Additionally, I have made sure that the next gen spreadsheet and the classic workbook are both in the same project.
Thanks,
Haley
1Hi Haley Dockery!
You guessed it, the option to move a source link in this method is only available between two files of the same type, i.e. classic file to classic file or next gen to next gen. While the links look the same, they are built a slightly different framework, so that's why you cannot "cross the streams" (hopefully you get the Ghostbusters reference).
Let me know if you need any further clarification or need anything else. Thanks so much and have a great day!0I too have a large amount of links that i need to move from an old Classic spreadsheet and now point to a next gen spreadsheet. Other than manually pasting every single destination link (i believe i have over 700 destinations) are there any other options?
Thanks
nicole
0Hi Nicole!
One solution may be to simply transition the Classic Workbook into a next gen Spreadsheet. There's more info on this process here on our Help site, and of course you CSM would be a great resource too to go over how that might work for you.
Other than that, I can't think of a better way to move that many links. I'll keep mulling around different options too, but in the meantime let me know what questions you have or if you need anything else. Cheers!
