The Bulk Import and Unimport Utility Chain allows for quick and efficient management of large Wdata tables containing multiple datasets. When a table’s structure needs to be updated, such as renaming columns, changing IDs or changing data types this chain can automatically unimport all associated datasets, eliminating the need to manually remove each one.
Once the table schema has been updated, the same chain can seamlessly reimport all datasets back into the table, streamlining maintenance and reducing manual effort for large-scale Wdata updates.
Requirements
A Wdata table that contains files in either Staged or Imported status.
This template supports Wdata tables with fewer than 1,000 files.
For tables with more than 1,000 files, use the Workiva API to retrieve a list of files, as the Workiva command cannot process volumes above this limit.
Find the template
The Bulk Import and Unimport Utility is located in the Workiva Chains section of the Templates screen.
Here's how to find it:
- In Chain Builder, go to the Templates tab.
- Select Workiva Chains from the menu at the top.
- Search for Bulk Import and Unimport Utility Chain at the top right and open the template.
- After locating the template, click New Chain to deploy it to your workspace.
Runtime inputs
| Runtime input | Purpose | Field type | Required |
| Table ID | The unique identifier of the Wdata table where the import or unimport operation will be performed. | Text | Yes |
| Import Files | Defines the operation to perform. When ticked, all datasets within the specified table will be imported. When left unticked, the chain will unimport all existing datasets from that table. | Boolean | Yes |
Troubleshooting
To view your chain run history, including errors:
- Go to the Monitor tab in Chain Builder.
-
Hover over the question mark to view the status of the chain run
If your chain triggered an error or failed import or un-import files in your Wdata table:
- Verify whether there are any files present in the Wdata table, regardless of whether they are in Staged or Imported status.
- Ensure the API grant has the necessary permissions to access the workspace and table.
- When inputting the Table ID, ensure that the entire ID has been entered and there are no leading or trailing blank spaces.
