Industry insight
If you report using the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) — such as to comply with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) — there are some recent developments to be aware of.
- CSRD Sustainability Omnibus: The proposal to delay timelines passed and is being transposed by European Union member states. Another proposal — to simplify and reduce the scope of CSRD — remains under negotiation.
-
Upcoming draft of the ESRS: European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) Sustainability Reporting Board (SRB) plans to finalize a simplified draft of the ESRS — which could significantly reduce data points — by the end of July. The proposed draft would then begin to undergo the full legislative process by October, when EFRAG makes their presentation to the European Commission. Even with this simplification, the ESRS would remain the most comprehensive sustainability reporting standards in the world.
If adopted, the simplified ESRS will appear in Sustainability Explorer. To learn more, view Explore European Sustainability Reporting Standards in Support Center.

What's new
Speaking of simplification, a recent update to Sustainability Program helps streamline data collection and ensure data consistency. Where metrics previously created all values possible based on collection frequency and dimension — with a task for each value — you now have more control over the values a metric collects, and the tasks used to collect them.
After you set up the value type and any applicable dimension from the Configure metric panel, click Add values to choose the specific collection periods and dimensional values to collect with the metric. You can then curate the values and their supporting material from Values, where you can also apply an aggregation — such as Sum or Average — to enable at-a-glance analysis.
From Tasks, you can delegate the values' data collection to other workspace members, and — if collected through the Workiva Tasks portal — bundle multiple values together in a single task. To help streamline data collection, you can also combine values from existing Not sent tasks into new tasks for the Workiva Tasks portal.
Each value collected through a connected source file still requires its own task. To ease task creation, if you apply these values together when you create a task, the metric creates multiple tasks in bulk — one per connected value, all with the same assignment details.
To learn more, view Take control of Sustainability Program metrics with new Values and Tasks configuration in the Workiva Community.
What's next: To further simplify data collection, you'll be able to apply multiple dimensions to a metric, to enable exponentially more values to collect and group together in tasks. For example, from one metric, collect Headcount by Gender for specific Departments across multiple Locations, with a separate task for each location; coming soon!
