You need to set up a fiscal calendar for XBRL to have a list of reporting dates to choose from when tagging facts in your document. After you set up the fiscal calendar, select it in the XBRL profile for your document. Make sure to update your fiscal calendars when rolling forward.
Create fiscal calendars
To create a fiscal calendar:
- 1
- Open the document, click the XBRL tab, and make sure Show XBRL is on.
- 2
- Choose an XBRL profile if one is not already applied.
- 3
- Select Attributes on the XBRL toolbar, and then click Fiscal Calendars in the drop-down menu.
- 4
- Click the fiscal calendar drop-down and select New Calendar.
- 5
- Name the calendar and select the period frequency:
- Annual creates only fiscal year-end dates.
- Quarterly creates quarter-end dates for all four quarters.
- 6
- Check the On Calendar checkbox if your fiscal dates match standard calendar dates. When selecting this option, dates for previous years, the current year, and future years are available.
- 7
- Click Create and either review the on-calendar dates or add your company’s fiscal dates if they are off-calendar dates.
- 8
- Click Close to finish.
You can now select the fiscal calendar in the XBRL profile and use its dates when tagging facts.
Rename fiscal calendars
To rename a fiscal calendar:
- 1
- Select Attributes on the XBRL toolbar, and then click Fiscal Calendars in the drop-down menu.
- 2
- Click the fiscal calendar list and select the calendar you want to rename.
- 3
- Click the gear icon and select Rename to make changes.
- 4
- Click Rename to finish.
Archive fiscal calendars
Archive calendars when you no longer need them. Archiving a calendar removes it from the list of calendars for all users. You can restore archived fiscal calendars at any time. Archiving does not delete the calendar and it does not change the dates in your document.
To archive a fiscal calendar:
- 1
- Select Attributes on the XBRL toolbar, and then click Fiscal Calendars in the drop-down menu.
- 2
- Click the fiscal calendar list and select the calendar you want to archive.
- 3
- Click the gear icon and select Archive.
Restore fiscal calendars
To restore an archived calendar:
- 1
- From the Attributes menu on the XBRL toolbar, click Fiscal Calendars.
- 2
- Click the fiscal calendar drop-down, highlight Archived calendars at the bottom of the list, and select the fiscal calendar you want to restore.
- 3
- Click the Restore fiscal calendar button and click Close to finish.
Best practices
When creating a fiscal calendar with off-calendar dates, we recommend including the following time periods in your fiscal calendars:
- Create the current year, two years in the future, and two years prior for all four quarters. For example, if the current period is Q4 2024, enter dates for Q1 - Q4 for the years 2022 - 2026.
- Include the previous year’s Q4 end date. For example, if the earliest time periods are Q1 - Q4 2022, also add the Q4 2021 date to provide full-year context for 2022.
