To add multiple items to Sustainability Program in bulk, you can use Import to generate Spreadsheet templates that include the sheets and columns required to import new:
- Program tags
- Custom dimensions
- Topics
- Metrics
- Metrics' tags, dimensions, or references to Sustainability Explorer content
Tip: To import collected data or task assignments for metric values, contact your Workiva CSM or implementation partner.
With these templates, you can set up a new Program or add items to an existing Program. To help ensure items import correctly, Sustainability Program validates the template to identify any errors to resolve before import.
Note: Use Import to add new details to a Program. To update metrics' existing details, use Find and replace instead.
Step 1. Generate template
From Sustainability Program, create a Spreadsheet template with the sheets and columns required for your import:
- From Program overview, select the Program to import details into:
- For a new Program, select Create program from the menu, then name the new Program as necessary.
- For an existing Program, select it by name.
- For a new Program, select Create program from the menu, then name the new Program as necessary.
- From the menu of either Program overview or the outline, select Import.
- Select Choose template, and click Next.
- Select the sheets to include in the template — based on the details to import — and click Create.
Step 2. Complete template
From the Spreadsheet created by Sustainability Program, complete each sheet of the template with its details to import.
Tip: To complete the template, multiple workspace members can collaborate in the Spreadsheet at the same time.
Note: The template includes only the sheets you choose to generate from Sustainability Program.

Step 3. Validate import
Before you import the template, the Program will check its details for errors. From Sustainability Program, choose whether to begin to validate the template, or resume its existing validation.
To begin to validate a template:
- From the menu of either Program overview or the outline, select Import.
-
Select Import from template, and click
Next.
-
In Template 1, select the type of details
to import — such as Tag or Topic — and then the Spreadsheet
template and section to import from.
- To import another sheet, click Import another, then specify the details and section to import.
- After you set up all details to import, click Preview import to validate the templates.
From the validation, you can view whether the template's rows contain errors or are ready to import.
Step 4: Resolve errors
Tip: Sustainability Program imports only rows with a status of Ready, so you can import them at any time — even as you continue to resolve other rows' errors.
If the validation finds errors, choose whether to fix them or remove their rows:
- Review the error:
- To review all errors found, click Errors to resolve, then browse through each issue.
- To view a specific error, click Error in the Status column of its row.
- To review all errors found, click Errors to resolve, then browse through each issue.
- Choose whether to fix or remove the error:
- To edit a row's entry, click Fix error, then double-click the cell and edit as necessary.
- To instead exclude the row from the import, click Remove from import.
- As you resolve errors, click Validate to save your edits and ensure they fix the issues.

Step 5. Import ready rows
Note: Depending the number of sheets and rows, the import may take some time. Feel free to work on other things, just keep the import's tab open in your workspace. Thanks for your patience!
To import ready rows into the Program:
- To import ready rows as you resolve other rows' errors, select Ready rows, Import ready rows from the menu.
- If all rows are ready with no errors, click Import.
