Having trouble converting 4 tables next to each other to XBRL
已回覆Hi all, we are trying to re-create the Company's R&D chart (listing projects that are in different phases in each column). So naturally, you would think that creating a table with 4 column would do. However, due to the fact some of the projects have very long name, in order to show it correctly, we need to heighten the row given limited column width, which is not the best thing to do consider the project in the next column might not need the extra height, and it will show up as having inconsistent spacing.
As a solution, we created 4 separate table right next to each other, representing each column, and this way if we heighten a row in a column, it will not impact the other columns. The strategy worked out great and prints out beautifully in PDF. However, when we convert it to XBRL via XBRL preview or Word, the 4 tables that are close to each other won't stay next to each other, instead, they basically go after each other not next to each other, which becomes unpresentable.
Have anyone encountered issues like this before? I wouldn't mind making it a single table, but again the spacing will be inconsistent if certain project in a given column needs heightened row. Someone with exceptional Word doc skill may be able to create column like effect without creating a table, which might be the solution. I am open to all suggestions :)

Thanks for your question. It's a real brain teaser, for sure. I did a little thinking on it and one possible solution, at least for XBRL, might be to actually phantom tag those tables in a non-printing section and arrange that table in a way you want and not tag them in the actual, presented document. You could even potentially format the non-printing section to be landscape instead of portrait and buy yourself some more space for the table's column width. Does this make sense?

Hi Mike, appreciate the reply. I realized that I mis-worded the issue. This is in the business section of the 10K and therefore does not need to be XBRL tagged. What I meant was that despite the tables being fine in Workiva and PDF, when I do the "Edger" preview (this is where I mis-worded it, I mentioned XBRL when it really has nothing to do with XBRL), the table wouldn't stay with each other. So this is really critical because the Edger view is what matters. So this issue has more to do with how tables get Edgerized when they are next to each other. Thank you!0No problem. That makes more sense now :) I have a few ideas for you. - Create a table that is 2 rows and 4 columns. The headings will be in the first row, and then all the text would be in the second row for each corresponding column. You can insert a hard return in the cell with CTRL + Return (Enter) and also format the text within the cell too. This would make the table full length without distorting the text in each column. The full table would also EDGARize as expected.
- Create a table that is 4 columns and merge cells (CTRL + M) to achieve the desired result. As you add your text, merge cells as needed to get them to align as you need. The overall row number would depend on how much is added, but it would still EDGARize the whole table.
- Create the table in another application, save as an image file and insert that image into your Wdesk document. This method isn't great, as you can't edit the changes on the fly, but it would still work if needed.

Amazing suggestions. I wonder why I did not think of making it just 1 row. I guess it was because I tried a hard return using Alt + return like in Excel and it didn't work so I thought it is not possible in Workiva. Thank you so much for putting the time into solving this for us.0
