Section numbering / reference automatically updates

Wondering if someone could help in relation to references within sections. Say we had the following section set up in a document:
1. Introduction (Section)
1.1 Summary (Child Section)
1.2 Key Points (Child Section)
How do you make the references update automatically? So if we were to add in a new 1.2 child section we would want the originally 1.2 per above to automatically update to 1.3, but currently we have to adjust it manually because the reference just resets itself.
Is there something we are doing wrong?

I would suggest setting up and using a Spreadsheet that will become the source of your section names and numbering. You would use this spreadsheet to link the various section references you have in your glossary, document, etc. With that being said, you will need to manually update your source spreadsheet but with doing so you will be able to update all links related to these sections. Hope this makes sense.
