Difficulties linking amounts in 8-K Earnings Release Exhibit 99 to spreadsheet

I was trying to link amounts presented in my Exhibit 99 to a spreadsheet for purposes of having the spreadsheet perform a calculation whose results I am linking to the Exhibit 99.  For whatever reason the link from the Exhibit 99 to the spreadsheet does not work while the link from the spreadsheet to the Exhibit 99 does.  When performing the link from the Exhibit 99 to the spreadsheet I've made sure that "create links" is being turned on when I view the blue clipboard that shows up after I've copied and pasted.  

When I do the same linkage process from the 10-K to the spreadsheet I do not have the same issue. Is there some step that I am missing or some document property change that I need to make?

    Happy to help as best I can. One other thought is that perhaps your Exhibit 99 is frozen or locked. You can check that from Home, but if it were frozen or locked, you'd not be able to do any editing to the file.

    One thing that may be occurring is the combo of classic and next generation types. Spreadsheets are already a next generation type. Do you know, is your Exhibit 99.1 a classic Document, or next gen Document? Sometimes it can be hard to tell, but perhaps the easiest is the icons. Here's what they look like in Workiva:

    The reason I mention that is if you are trying to link from a classic Document to a next generation Spreadsheet, then there would be no link option. If you were to do the opposite, link from a next generation Spreadsheet to a classic Document, then you would be able to link. In addition, you'd be able to link just fine between two next generation types, i.e. a next gen Document to next gen Spredsheet, or vice versa.

    Yeah it appears that the Exhibit99.1 is a classic document.  So the only way to fix this problem would be to convert the Exhibit99.1 to a next gen document?

    Hi Mason,

    Yep, if you want to link from the classic Exhibit 99.1 to any sort of next gen type--Document or Spreadsheet--then you'd need to transition it too to next gen. Depending on your solution and license, you would have access to the transition tools. If so, they are available from Home via the right-click menu. Here's a Help article on the process: https://success.workiva.com/help/next-gen/transition-next/transition. Of course, you can still keep the Exhibit 99.1 in classic and link to it from either a classic or next gen file.
