No tab structure/hierarchy in next gen binders?
已回答Hello,
We've been using the classic binders for a couple years as a repository for our electronic tie out support. With the retirement of classic binders coming soon, we were looking into migrating to the new platform. However, I don't see any way to similarly structure the binder to show virtual "tabs" or any kind of similar structure. Thus far it only looks like I can save files into a large "binder" without any way to organize what I'm saving. Am I missing something with the functionality of the new binders?
Thanks.

Hi Bryan!
Quick follow-up here. A recent release to Workiva has made Tabs available in Binders.
Tabs can also be nested, though the max is at 5 sub-tabs. You can drag them around and rename them as well.
We appreciate your feedback here. Let us know what you think, and if you have any questions. Thanks again and happy Friday!
Hi Bryan,
Thanks for your great question! Although these tabs aren't available yet in the new binders, they will be by time classic binders are disabled in June. Like tabs, there are a few other binders features that are yet to migrate as well. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Cheers!
0Thanks, Liz. That's good to know.
0We use classic binders a lot, too, and have also started using the new binders system. We started a number and letter indexing system for our support files a number of years ago to keep track of all our files and reference them in multiple sections without keeping extra copies of files in our binder. That indexing system has helped us to maintain an organized structure in the new binders system.
Looking back on it now, it's similar to how physical books in a library are indexed using the Dewey Decimal system, only our sections are designed by letter patterns and files are numbered.
Hope that helps!
0Thanks, Edith. We do something similar with our file/workpaper naming conventions as well. It's a big help in identifying/organizing the files along the way. Classic binders was a big help to us for organizing what used to be paper binders and tie-outs prior to 2020. I'm glad that a version of the hierarchy structure is planned for next gen, and we're looking forward to seeing what other features get rolled out.
Speaking of other features, I have another question for our Workiva representatives. Will there possibly be support for additional file types in next gen? I'd love to be able to upload .msg files instead of having to convert them to .pdf first.
0Hi Bryan!
I think there is a definitely a possibility for supporting .msg files to be added to Binders. We have seen this request in the past and as our next gen version gets continually improved, I'd see this being brought up again. I'll put this back in front of the team and will keep you apprised of the status. Thanks for sharing and have a great rest of your day!
0Popping back in here to check on the status of the nesting/hierarchy structure in next gen binders. The way things were transitioned is leaving us to find workarounds outside of Wdesk. The new binders aren't much more useful than putting all of our documents in a single network folder. All of the organization we built into the classic binders was lost. We're probably going to go back through the last two years and rebuild the structure we lost in a network drive and may even recreate these in a physical form. The way this transition was handled is pretty disappointing.
0Hi Mike,
The tab structure being restored is helpful, but I'm not seeing any way to target a particular tab when I upload a file. No matter the active tab, my files seem to upload to the base tab/highest level in the hierarchy. When we create our binders each quarter, having to move dozens of files to the right spot manually will be frustrating. Is there a way to target a specific tab that I haven't noticed? If there isn't, I don't think binders will be an effective tool for us.
0Anything on the request above. This is the second quarter that we haven't been able to use binders because the functionality isn't sufficient for our needs.
0Hi Bryan,
Thanks for your interest in this feature enhancement. I can definitely see how being able to select the location of the upload would be beneficial. At this time, our product team does not have this on their future roadmap, but I'll share your ideas with them for consideration.
We'll keep you updated as this request moves forward. Thanks!
