How does the "exceptions" functionality work?
BesvartI'm currently trying to move our quarterly certification process into Workiva certifications. I wanted to further understand how the "exception" process worked. Do responders get a drop down free form response box? How does this show up on the reviewer side?

Hi Parth!
So sorry for my delay. Here's some instructions that might help.
In Workiva certifications, the "exception" process works as follows:1. Responder Side:
- If a response is marked as an exception, the responder is required to provide an explanation for their response. This explanation can include a written response and optionally, supporting files. 2. Reviewer Side:
- Reviewers can toggle the "Approver view" to filter responses by their review status (e.g., Rejected, Accepted, or All responses). By default:
- Non-exception responses are marked as "Accepted."
- Exception responses are marked as "Rejected," but reviewers can change these selections as needed.
- Reviewers can also add optional feedback to each response. If there are any rejected responses, the letter cannot be approved and must be returned to the signers for revision. This process ensures that exceptions are flagged for additional review and approval, maintaining the integrity of the certification process. Below are some articles for reference.Let me know if you need further clarification!0Hi Mike,
Thanks for the update! I was also wondering, with these certifications, is it possible for certifiers to go back in and update the certification? If so, how do i enable that functionality?
0Even if a certification has already started, you can edit it in the Process Status view of the associated process. To do this:
- Click the dropdown arrow next to the certification action.
- Select Edit Action from the menu.
You can edit fields like the title, any signer or approval steps that haven't already started, and the assignee or approver reminders. Please let us know if you have any more questions! Have a great day!
0Hi there,
Updating some Community posts and came across this thread. I believe the restart option would be good for this request!
The Restart option allows process owners to reset a certification action that has already started, sending it back to the beginning for all assignees.- Go to the Process tab in the associated process
- Click the three-dot menu next to the certification action
- Select Restart
- Enter an explanation for the restart
- Click Restart — all certification action assignees will be notified that their tasks have been restarted
A few items to note:- You cannot restart certification actions in a closed process
- You cannot restart a cancelled certification action — the Restart option will be greyed out
- Workaround: Duplicate the cancelled action so you don't need to re-configure details from scratch, then send it out as a new action
- If an entire process was accidentally cancelled mid-run, it cannot be restored to its prior state — the process can be re-opened, but cancelled actions must be duplicated and re-sent
If you need the process to remain editable (and avoid accidental closure), set the process close setting to "Manually" in the Process Properties. This keeps the process open until a process owner manually closes it — closed processes can also be re-opened.0Logg på for å legge inn en kommentar.
