Document markup - turn off edit document layer
VoltooidI was using the markup capability and I like the fact that I can tick out a document in the system. However, it is frustrating that sometimes when I'm clicking into the markup items, I click into editing the underlying document itself. I'm somewhat concerned that if I give more people this capability that we're going to have places where people have accidentally edited the document in addition to adding their tick marks. Is there a way to add the ability to turn off the edit layer in the markup section (just for yourself) so that you can't accidentally change data in the underlying document?

Sadly, today there is not a way to do this though it has been considered. I shared this with our engineers working on markup and they had the following quesitons for you. Cab you elaborate on when this occurs for you, i.e. is this a mis-click or something else? That being said, a markup-only mode per user does seem reasonable.

When I create a text box, I am creating one without a border since the borders take up so much space. When you create the text box, your cursor doesn't automatically go into the box and without a border, you can't see exactly where it is. So it could me missing the box. And then once you click into the underlying table, you have to click out of the table before you can click into any of the markup boxes again (even when you click directly on where the markup boxes are). I was also getting a strange action this morning where I was in a markup box and when I started typing, it threw me to a completely different page. After having it happen 3 times, I refreshed the window and the strange behavior stopped. However, I later found that three of my cells in my underlying table that I was commenting on had disappeared. I'm guessing those two things are related, but I'm not sure. Unfortunately I'm having enough issues that I'm not ready to have my users start with using the feature until some of these bugs are worked out.

I submitted a comment to the help desk on this yesterday and was immediately told this was not going to be an implemented change. Happy to see I am not the only person on this community board with this request.
My comment was to please add the ability for a user with "viewer" permissions to use the "markup" features within a document. That way, a person can tie-out the document without accidentally editing a disclosure. For example, when the document “Owner” of a 10Q/10K wishes to minimize any risk of document edits and changes everyone’s permissions to “viewer”, the Viewer can still utilize the Markup features to finalize their tie-out. Currently Viewers can leave comments, they should also be able to Markup/Tie-out the document with out actually editing the document.
When testing out this feature, numerous times I accidentally edited a table or paragraph when I thought I was typing within the markup text box I created. This is extremely too risky of a feature to adopt for someone who is using this tool for SEC reporting. I should be able to safely use the markup tool without any risk of accidentally editing a live document.
I like the idea of a "markup only mode" as well, if it achieves the same objective (prevents someone from editing a live document).

We have added a new enhancement to Markup called "Markup only" mode.
You can toggle on a "view only" mode when using Markup that disables any abilities to edit the Workiva file while adding Markup to it. By default, this is on when Markup is turned on. You can also switch modes to "Editing with Markup" which allows edting while adding Markup. More info on these modes can be found here.
