Creating Sections for an imported document
BeantwoordI imported a word document. Everything imported as one big section. How do I separate the document into sections in Workiva platform?

I think I had to create section breaks in word for it import into separate sections in Wdesk. But when I did that, my list numbering reset for each section, when I had continued numbering across sections in word.

Jamie is correct, that's likely the best method. Our Word importer looks for Section Breaks and creates them in the Workiva document after import. If none are present, it comes in as one large section.

Thank you. I've already gone in and created the sections and imported the document again. It worked fine. As you might can tell I am brand new, so just learning.

Rebecca Byrd Mike Can you guys explain in greater detail how you did this. I called the help desk and there were little to no help with this issue and I was told they didn't agree that adding "section breaks" in the Word Docx. would work. This is somewhat time sensitive so I would appreciate some guidance or maybe someone I can connect with who understands this process. Thanks

Chuck, Although I initially said it worked fine, that was actually with a fairly small and simpler document. While the sections imported fine, the numbering keeps resetting at certain sections even when we use continuous. We are still struggling with getting this to work as we want. I hadn't posted again, because we were still trying to figure out on our own.

Happy to help. Typically you'd enter a Section Break in your Word file by going to Layout > Breaks and choosing one of the options from there. Here's some documentation on Microsoft's site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/insert-a-section-break-eef20fd8-e38c-4ba6-a027-e503bdf8375c
The I usually use the Continuous break, as it doesn't visibly change the Word file but adds in the breaks where I want. If you have non-printing characters applied, you'll see this representing the section break, so you can see your work.
I applied a few of those section breaks to a test file and imported it, and the sections created lined up with those sections breaks.
For the most part, that works pretty well. Does this get you to where you are wanting to go?

I am having the same issue above, with my numbers resetting even though I am using continuous. Did anyone find a solution for this? Thanks!

Hi Kelly!
One thought to alleviate this would be to run the steps to convert auto-text to text, as mentioned on this post. Having that and also section breaks inserted into your Word file should hopefully net a cleaner looking import.
