thanks! How could I have found that on my own? I went into the insert symbols and did a search on "non-breaking space" in each tab and got no results

That's a good call-out, Grace. I am finding the same, i.e. that that search lacks a bit. It does show up with the words "no", "non" or "space" but it seems "no break" or "non break" or even the hyphen throws it off. I'll bring this up to our Product Team to look at improving, so we certainly appreciate the note. Holler if you need anything else and chat with you soon.

Hi, to follow form the previous posts, is there a non-breaking hyphen available? Can't see anything from looking through the symbols available but the search does depend on using the right terminology. Thanks!

    Hi Craig!

Welcome to the Community, and thanks for the question.

Currently there's not a non-breaking hyphen available for insert from the Symbol menu. This is an ongoing request, however, and I'm happy to tag you onto it as well so you can stay apprised. In the meantime, I do have a workaround for you.

You can insert a non-breaking hyphen into Workiva by pasting in the unicode value. The unicode values for a non-breaking hyphen are 2010 and 2011. To insert these characters, follow these steps.

    1. Open a blank document in MS Word
    2. In text, type Alt+2011
    3. The non-breaking hyphen should appear: ‑
    4. Copy the non-breaking hyphen and paste into Workiva

If you are using a Mac, you would follow these steps:

    1. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Source and enable Unicode Hex Input keyboard
    2. In your Workiva file, type Option+2011
    3. The non-breaking hyphen should appear
    4. Change your keyboard back to your standard one

Hopefully this helps. Do let me know what questions you have on any of the above, or if you need anything else. Thanks again and have a great day!

Hi Mike - we would like to have the non-breaking hyphen available for insert from the Symbol menu as well. If there is any update about it, can you share?  Thanks!

    Hi Lisa!

Thanks for reaching out. Upon checking the status, sadly I find no change so far. It does remain under review by our product team still but it is not currently prioritized for Q3 2021 nor on the roadmap as far as I can tell. We've received some recent interest, however, so I'd be happy to push this into the Idea Lab and see if we can't get this looked at in Q4, if not Q1 2022.

I was looking for a way to use a non-breaking hyphen to show dates in mmm-yy format on the x-axis of a chart.  Using the default format in Workiva resulted in a line break after the hyphen:

    mmm-
    yy

To keep the dates on a single line, I thought I could copy a non-breaking hyphen from Word, so I tried Ctrl+Shift+hyphen, and I also tried Alt+0173, but with both I still got a line break in my Workiva chart.  Finally, I stumbled across this thread and Mike's post was super helpful. Unicode 2011 works perfectly, but I did have to modify step 2 slightly.

    1. Open a blank document in MS Word
    2. In text, type 2011, then press ALT, then press X
    3. The non-breaking hyphen should appear: ‑
    4. Copy the non-breaking hyphen and paste into Workiva

I copied the non-breaking hyphen into a custom format in Workiva, and its perfect!
