Images in Docs
BeantwoordA few questions related to images in docs:
- Is there a way to add an image (already in Workiva) to a document rather than having to re-import the image? For example, we have a company logo that appears on multiple pages but for each instance, I have to re-import the image from my desktop.
- In classic documents, when an image is added to a table the image is automatically resized to fit the width/height of the table cell. This doesn't happen in documents and takes a few tries to properly resize the image to fit the cell. Will there be any updates to automatically resize images in tables?
- For images in the 10-Q, when we generate the file in the Filing tab it renames our images rather than using the naming convention from my local computer. If we don't want the images to be renamed, how can we get around this?
- Lastly, when an image is in a table cell the option to right-click on the image is not available compared to when the image is in the document. When the image is in the table cell, you aren't able to download/delete image or see the image properties. Is there a fix being worked on for this feature?

Few more questions related to images in Next Gen:
1. When running through the test filing steps, images which occurs on each page of our docs (i.e. company logo) is duplicated several times when the doc is generated. As such, we have about 30-40 of the same image in the filing package.
2. Having a "Project" folder in Classics was useful when adding/re-adding/renaming images. This isn't an option in Next Gen and thus, making it really difficult to rename images as well as search for images. Is there a plan to add a similar "Project" folder in Next Gen which helps with filing organization?
7Hi Irene!
Great questions all around. Let me tackle these here for ya:
- Yes! You can drag and drop from you desktop as an option, or even copy/paste the image from your file in Wdesk or from another file on your computer, such as a Word doc.
- There's not any current work I'm aware of to auto resize an image but I'm happy to pass along this feedback to our Product Team for further discovery.
- These images are renamed when generating to make sure they are EDGAR compliant. You can rename them during the filing process, however doing so will require you to regenerate again to address the naming change in your file as well. Our Product Team is similarly always looking into making this experience better and I've passed this feedback along as well.
- That's a good catch! We've had a few reports of this nuance as well and our Product Team is looking into this discrepancy for tables. I'll attach you to that request as well and keep you updated with changes there.
And your related questions:
- This particular issues is a known one and a current limitation of next gen filings. We are working to address this and make the experience better for next gen filers. I'll connect your interest with our Product Team and keep you updated on progress.
- There are a few options for you here, which I touch on this post. To reiterate, you can copy/paste from a Classic project or Home, insert images into non-printing section and copy/paste from there, or insert images into another next gen Document and copy/paste from there.
Hopefully these help answer your questions. Let me know if you need any clarification on the above or have other questions. Thanks again and keep staying great!
0Hi Irene!
I have great news. A recent release to the next gen platform has now made it so multiple images are no longer created when re-inserted. 🎉. Thanks so much for your feedback and patience. Certainly give us a holler if you have any questions or need anything else. Cheers! 🥂
0Hi Mike - I'm having the same issue as Kevin's item 3 with images being renamed during the filing process. I want the name of my filed images to be clean, such as "image1.jpg". I made sure this was an EDGAR-compliant naming convention. However, when I generate my filing docs, the image is generated with the name "image0a031.jpg". Can you please provide step-by-step instructions how to fix this, and perhaps fix this going forward in the system so that images are not renamed if their names are already EDGAR-compliant?
Thanks,
Matt
1Hi Matthew!
Thanks for sharing. Let me bring this up to our next gen Filing experts to see what should be the expected experience here, and tips on how you can edit that. I'll be in touch soon but give me a holler if you have any follow-ups or additional questions. Thanks!
0Hello again, Matthew,
Ok, so I got some updates. First, as to why it keeps changing, currently in Workiva, the application does not validate image names for compliance (to catch it if it is indeed compliant) so the system renames all of the images files to a syntax you are seeing to ensure compliance and uniqueness.
Furthermore, the ability to rename an image files is not yet available but is something our Product Team is looking at allowing in next gen. I don't have any specifics on when this will be made available, but I've passed along your feedback here and will keep you updated with any news.
Let me know what questions you have for me in the meantime. Thanks again and have an excellent Friday!
0Ok thanks for following up Mike. I know the image names don't impact the filing, but it just looks sloppy when you view the filing on the SEC's website, especially when there are many images.
Looking forward to an update!
0Hi all! Is there a crop feature for images within a Workiva document?
0Hello Esmeralda,
There is currently not a way to crop images within a Workiva document. However, it is on our roadmap to do. I'm happy to share your interest with the team and will keep you updated going forward.
Thank you and happy Friday!
