Copying a table in Next Gen Documents
GeplandHi, does anyone know if you can copy a table in Next Gen document and maintain all the formatting? I have a table in my document that I like to duplicate in another section. It would be easier if I can copy and paste the table and it would maintain the formatting so the look would be consistent without me manually formatting the new table. I tried but the paste only paste in some standard format and I did not see any options to applying formatting when "paste" like in Spreadsheets. Thanks.

Hey Lena,
I have spent a bit of time copy/pasting tables in a Next Gen document with various formatting, and what I have attempted has come along into the paste. However, I do not have too extensive of formatting.
Would you mind sharing a little additional info about what formatting is missing when you paste your table?
I'll be happy to reach out to the right people and get you the answers you need!
Talk to you soon,
0See the following example table in my document:
Let's say I want to duplicate this table because I want the exact column width, spacing and lines, etc. I do not see any option to "copy" the whole table. So I highlighted all the cells and do a "copy". When I paste just below it, this is what shows up:
There is no little "clipboard" in the bottom like in Spreadsheet that let you choose to paste links or apply formatting etc. All the formatting for the table is lost. So I have to manually re-adjust all the column widths, heights, borders, etc. I would like to have the same table formatting so I can sure the tables look the same in the document without the extra work. Also, none of the links in the original table are copy through. In some cases I would like the links to copy cover because I am moving an entire table to a different section of the document.
Thanks.
0Thanks for the additional info, Lena.
I think I have been able to narrow down what you are experiencing. To copy the table, are you selecting the blank, grey box in the upper left-hand corner of the table, then CTRL + C?
Can I ask that we try another way? Put your cursor to the right of your formatted table, then click and drag to the left to select the whole table (as if you were highlighting text to hyperlink), now CTRL + C and CTRL + V to paste. I expect this will result in a much better carry over of formatting.
Keep me updated!
0It works!! Thanks.
0Lena L Were you able to resolve your linking issue as well for some cells to retain their linking?
Also, the "cursor to the right of your formatted table, then click and drag to the left to select the whole table (as if you were highlighting text to hyperlink), now CTRL + C and CTRL + V to paste" instruction did not work for me. When you are clicking and dragging, are you dragging the entire columns themselves?
0Yes - it did work for me and I have not had a problem since learning this trick. It's a bit tricky in the drag. You put the cursor to the right of the table in the document, then click and drag to the left until the table is highlighted. You are not dragging the columns, just the mouse so that the whole table is highlighted. Do the CTRL-C for copy and CTRL-V for paste. All the formatting and the linking are copied over to the new location.
0Thanks for the tip! I got it too!
0Is there a way to LINK to a whole table? For example if I have the balance sheet in the 10K and also the same in the earnings release, I would don't want to maintain 2 separate tables (for example, adding/removing lines)
0Hi there!
At this time you cannot link an entire table in the Workiva application. You can definitely copy the table and paste it into another section or another file and the links will be the same, but they'd still be two tables.
That being said, our development team is looking into this functionality and I'm happy to pass along your interest. We'll be in touch with next steps there but in the meantime, do let me know what questions you have.
Thanks again and have a happy Friday!
0Hi everyone! Good news is that this is now on the future roadmap and set to be released in Q1 of 2024.
Thank you all for the feedback!
