    Hello!

I have some good news here! To copy whole sections from one file to another, you can utilize the document outline. First, select the section(s) you would like to copy. To select multiple sections, you can hold down the ctrl button on your keyboard while clicking on the section name in the outline. Next, use ctrl+c, or right click in the document outline to select "copy". In your new document, click in the document outline and then use ctrl+v to paste the sections.

If you have any questions or you encounter issues with this method, please let us know!

    Hi Melissa!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. At this time, there is not automated way to copy a section from document to another.  Aside from the method mentioned above of copying from the old section to a new section, you can also export a section to DOCX and copy that into your new document as well. This may not be much an improvement on the previous method mentioned though, but it may be worth a shot.

I will say that our Product Team is investigating this feature and I've shared your interest with the team and will keep you updated going forward. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions on the above or need anything else. Thanks again and chat soon!

    Hi Mario,

Thanks for reaching out. Sadly, I don't have a good update here. Currently this cannot be done and is not planned to be worked on by our product team at this time. I'm happy to share your interest with the team and will definitely keep you updated should the status change.

Hi all, I also need to copy sections of a document from one document to another. Can Workiva please expedite this feature?  It was requested 3 years ago.

Would be great to be able to select the section in the document Outline and copy/paste to the other document Outline (similar to how PowerPoint functions).

Workiva's work-arounds are insufficient.  The regular Command key copy/paste function does not retain the original formatting (and why doesn't the menu copy/paste function work yet?).

Exporting content as a .docx and then importing to the other document requires reformatting, plus moving the section to the correct place in the document, plus corrections to the Table of Contents (TOC), as import places at the end of the document.

The shortcut is to copy the entire document, remove unneeded sections, and update the TOC.

Workiva is powerful, it should be able to copy/paste sections without having to do work-arounds.  Please reply.  Thank you!

Are there any updates to this yet?  Reformatting takes an enormous amount of time.  Thank you.

Re Liz's 2/28/23 posted instructions ["Next, use ctrl+c, or right click in the document outline to select "copy". In your new document, click in the document outline and then use ctrl+v to paste the sections"]:  I verified that ctrl+c and ctrl+v work in my document outline, thank you!  However, the Workiva Menu Copy/Paste functions still do not work. When will Workiva's Menu Copy/Paste be functional? Thank you, Carol

CAROL LAUMEIER you are referring a right-click menu choice for Copy and Paste, correct?

Hi Mike, no.  I mean the Workiva menu selections of Copy and Paste do not work.

You must use Control +C or Control +V to copy/paste.

Even though the menu shows Copy and Paste functions, they do NOT work.

Ah, ok. Gotcha. I follow now. On the backend I find some other requests for this and will add you to our list of interested customers. I don't have much of a timeline for when as this is currently only proposed at this time, but we'll be sure to keep you updated.

Hi Mike, hope all is well!

Is there any update on this feature now? I tried Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V and it was not working across files.

    Hi Candice!

All is well here. Thanks. Hope the same for you too :)

I circled back and at this time there's not new changes here. To copy/paste a single section across a file, you'd have to right-click Copy and in the new file right-click in the outline and choose Paste.

That said I'll be happy to add you as a requestor here and will keep you apprised of any new developments. Thanks again for the note and give us a holler if there are any questions in the meantime. Cheers!

Thank you Mike for the prompt reply!

I tried both - Ctrl C + Ctrl V and right click and neither worked. And when I use the right click paste, the below shows up every time. I tried exporting in Word and then importing as well, but it messed up the formatting and it will take a long time (and another team) to reformat that, so I was wondering if there is any other way that I can copy paste sections across files? Thank you!

    No problem, Candice!

And that is very bizarre. I tested and was able to at least copy and paste via the right-click menu across files. I would not anticipate that error message, so I've gone ahead and drummed up a support ticket for you to have our engineers take a closer look. A member of that team should be in touch shortly. I have good feels we'll be able to get this functioning for you with.🤞

Hi Mike - just to add to your conversation with the engineers. We get the same error as Candice. I've tried it multiple times since we were told it was available to no luck.

I thought it might be a Workspace thing - I know some features in the ESG workspace are not the same as the financial reporting one.

Hi Mike, I would like to add to what Jenn and Candice have mentioned that I get the same issue where I am not able to copy and paste the sections across documents and get the use Ctrl V message which when I do also doesn't paste. I have a colleague in the same document though that is able to, and we tested with the same browser and everything.

    Hi Tingting!

Thanks for reaching out. On the backend, this is not yet moved on and still remains an item to be done. If you hare hitting an error, I'd suggest reaching out to Customer Support to ensure nothing is amiss. Otherwise on my end I'll be sure to get you added to this request and will keep you apprised going forward. Let me know what follow-ups you have for me. Cheers!
