Hello and welcome to the Community, Nichole!

Great question. If I follow you correctly, you have a link that is sourced for one footnote and is linked out to a few destinations, but the true source link should actually come from your balance sheet financials and you're looking to change the source without having to relink them, correct?

The answer here is both yes and no. If you want to replace the source with a new source, then you would have to update the destinations so they have the same source too. However, you could do what's called a "chain link" and have the source from the balance sheet financials feed the value that is the source in your footnote. More on "chain linking" can be found here: https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035641432-Chain-link-with-iXBRL

Note that linking does have an impact on the XBRL applied to the value. If you were to change the destinations out, you'd need to reapply the XBRL, but if they are the same source, the XBRL that is tagged in once location should flow through. If you need different XBRL tags, then chain linking would be useful in this instance.

Let me know if I've missed the mark or you have any follow-ups for me. Thanks for your contributions and have a super day!

For any users coming across this post, I wanted to share an update.

Users can now convert a destination link to a source link in Workiva!

Right-click on the destination link and select:
    • Link options > Convert to source
Once converted, the new link will be in an "Unpublished" state — you'll need to publish it to push the value to destination links.
