We use connected sheets for reporting and in our case the sheets are connected to a query. So when we have needed to add additional columns, I have to add them to the query and then when I refresh the connection the columns come in to the connected spreadsheet.

Let's say you have two spreadsheets A and B.
A contains the source report and B leverages that report via a connection on a Sheet X.
The connected cells are locked due to the nature of how connected sheets work.
Spreadsheet B has other sheets that reference to the Sheet X either by direct cell refences or formulas. Could also have links.
If the formulas / references are not dynamic adding columns and rows to the sheet in Spreadsheet A would cause unwanted consequences by shifting underlying data.
The only way I know of to replicate what has been done on the primary is to temporarily disconnect the sheet add the required rows and columns and reconnect.
Not sure how it would work with queries as we don't have the Wdata.
