    Hi Dan,

In next gen waterfall charts there's a Series section in the chart properties menu that has a drop down that will allow you to pick "All Series" or the name of a single series. If you select a single series another drop down will appear that will allow you you to pick the name of a single column. I think this will give you the settings you're looking for, such as show/hide labels for a single column and adjust color. If you have other questions let us know!

I have a waterfall chart and in classic presentations we had the ability to select a particular column (which you reference how to do above) and we could select whether the column was a total or a change column. I don't see this functionality in NextGen. Is this available? I want to have the first and last columns be totals and the middle columns be change columns. Thanks!

Hi Angela! Total and Change columns do work a little bit differently in our next gen charts. Rather than being a setting in the chart panel, the total columns are designated on a separate line in the chart data. You can see the total represented in row 3 of this screenshot below. Note that the first value does remain in the first series, row 2. The first data point is always represented as a total column and the following data points change columns, with the final data point listed in row 3 as a total column.

If you have any other questions please let me know!

    Hey Rachael,

Thanks for your help, this last point about having them in two columns worked to get the final column to appear as a Total instead of Change.

The only problem is that now the waterfall chart thinks there ought to be data in the second column for all rows, so the bars in the chart are not aligned with the tickmarks now.

Here's what it looks like now with the two columns:

Here's what it used to look like, and what we need to get it to look like:

I can widen the bar size, but that won't get it to center over the tickmark properly.

Let me know if you have a solution for this.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Hi Dan,

If you select the last column in your chart and change it to a column type, it should change all the columns to again be centered above the ticks. I know this isn't intuitive, and I discussed with our development team. They're hoping to make our waterfall charts more user friendly in the future so it's easier to navigate settings like this. Here's a screenshot of the settings I'm referring to, let me know if it help!

Excellent! The columns are now centered, but it seems as I fix something, another issue comes up haha.

There isn't an option to put the label "Outside End" when it's a Column type... so I thought ok, what if I make both totals (left and right most columns) inside end so at least there's consistency there.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to expand the column width to fit the number in the first column...

    1) is there a way to put the label "Outside End" for columns like we have for the Waterfall?

    2) if not, how can I expand the width of the columns so that the numbers fit?  Also, I know my CFO is going to call us out on the columns not being consistent width, so please point me in the right direction for setting the column width for all columns.

Ok, so I sort of figured out a work around for getting the label to appear above the column...  In the Chart Data, I added another total column to the right of the total:

Then in the Document Chart Properties, I selected that Series "Total Label" and made it a Line type, then clicked "Show Labels", and unchecked "Marker" to get rid of the little dot.  Now I'm left with just the Label above the column.

It's a little bit higher than the Labels on the other columns, but I'm hoping no one notices.  I still can't figure out how to make the Column widths consistent either, so help on that would be great.

I'm glad you found that workaround for the total labels, they look great! I will make sure to note your request for that feature also. As for the column widths, if you select All Series in the chart properties panel, there's options for Bar Group Padding and Bar Padding that will adjust the widths. It's a little bit confusing when using them on a waterfall chart because you don't have series side by side, so it might appear like they're adjusting the same thing. It's more apparent what each setting does with a column chart that has multiple series grouped together. Here's a screenshot to try to help explain each setting:

    Thanks again for reaching out!

    Hi Rachael,

I wanted to follow up on Dan's issue of :

    1) Is there a way to put the label "Outside End" for columns like we have for the Waterfall?

If not, how can I change the color of the label that is inside the total column? I would like my columns to be dark blue the label to be white (If I can't put the label Outside End).

Here is a screen shot of my total column right now. You can see that the label inside is hard to read.

    Thanks!

    Katie

    Hi Katie,

Thanks for reaching out! For your first question, with your chart selected go to the general properties options and uncheck "stack bars". Once done you should be able to select outside end as a label option.

Alternatively, you can change the color of the text by selecting the label and applying a white text color from the Edit tab at the top of your screen in the Text Color drop-down (not in the charts panel).

Let me know if this helps you achieve the look you're going for! Thanks!
