    Hi Karen!

We have seen this happen from time to time and the best way to handle this would be to restore those trashed files, remove the links in those files, and then once the links are gone, trash them again. A quick way to find all these would be to run the Linked Filed Report on the doc in question and location all the links going to the trashed item. Now you'd be able to know that future copies will not include these errant links.

More info on the Linked Files Report can be found here on our Help site. Give me a holler too if you have any questions on the above, or you need anything else. Thanks much and best luck tracking down those pesky links!

Mike Davis I have this same issue with deleted files showing up in my linked sheet. For most, I was able to restore the file, remove the links, and then delete the file again as you suggested. However, there are several destination documents that I cannot find in my Trash folder. I have not emptied the trash, so I'm not sure why they are not there. Is there a trick to this?

It is confusing to show links to something that is not there. I think there should be a way for Workiva to remove all links if an item is actually completely deleted from the trash, but of course we'd need to be able to also have the feature to permanently delete single documents as well. Is this a feature that is being worked on? If not, can you please add it as a suggestion?

    Hi Linda!

I can share a little insight for you here as to what might be happening to the ones you cannot find in the link report.

If a file is in the trash, links do show up on the link report but they are considered "inactive".

That said, a file can be sent to the "shredder" if a Workspace Owner empties the trash. It will stay there for 30 days before then being "shredded" in the backend. At that point, all remaining source links are removed and any destination links become disconnected. Is this perhaps the state your files are in now, in limbo awaiting to be shredded?

This functionality today partially addresses a bit of this need, but do undertand the scenario where the links still appear in the report and this may not be desirable. There are some feature suggestions out there for automatically removing links when a files is deleted, for example, i.e. before it is even sent to a shredder. I'm happy to add you there.

Let me know too if you have any follow-ups or require anything else. Cheers!
