Next Gen Comment Scrolling
Completato
The following enhancement was shared by a Workiva user: When reviewing comments in Next Gen, you are required to open each comment individually where as in classic you were able to scroll through all open comments in the document. Including this previous feature would be a great time saver for those who frequently review comments. If you also would like this feature request, feel free to comment below, vote up the post or share your own awesome idea here. |

Hi all,
Great news! A recent release to Workiva has made margin comments available in Documents. Now you no longer need to click on an indicator the comment and instead, all the comments are inline with the document in the right margin. You may still hide the comments from the View option as well.
Thanks so much for your continued patience and feedback, and have a great day!
I agree! It is important to be able to see all comments opened at once.
Rebecca
0Definitely agree! This is our company's biggest complaint about Next Gen.
0Agreed, the ability to scroll through the comments in order is a big feature lacking in next gen.
1Agree, this is one of the few features we are missing in Next Gen and slows down our review functionality.
1Rebecca Demy Mark Thompson Anthony Miller Amanda Taylor Curious on your insights here. There were some recent comment improvements made but want to make sure we attach your requests to the right set of features.
Today, in the comment panel, you can show comments by entire document or section, and also filter by status, mentions, review, date, author and content. You can also move up and down the comments in the panel, and expand or collapse the threads. For the comment scrolling enhancement in next gen, what are you envisioning for this behavior?
Let us know your thoughts. Thanks as always and happy Monday!
-1Mike It would be nice if when you were scrolling through the comments it automatically "Jumped to" the place in the document where the comment is located. Visually it would also be nice if there was a physical "link" or "line" from where the comment was located in the document to the comment on the side bar. Finally, it would be nice to jump from comment to comment in the Review panel up top similar to how you can jump from Change to Change in Track Changes. Let me know if you have any follow up questions, thanks!
4I agree with Anthony's suggestions. My main concern is not being able to click "Next" or "Previous" on the comments and go through each comment in order as they appear in the document. The default sorting mechanism seems to be most recent at the top and the oldest comment at the bottom. While this is sometimes a nice way to view comments, it would also be nice to sort the comments based on where they appear in the document. Hopefully this helps provide some clarity on the request. Thanks!
4I agree with Anthony and Mark's suggestions- clicking through each comment and sorting in document order would be great.
1Agree with Mark. Visual link to the content would be great.
2Agree with comments above, and I would add a few other suggestions:
1) Having the overlay for the comments appear over the document instead of to the right of the document makes it inconvenient that you can't read the text the comment may be referencing underneath the overlay that appears when you click the gray dot. You have to click it again to hide it in order to see the document again, which is additional time spent clicking when you're trying to address a comment. I'd much rather have the "Show/Hide" section in the "View" tab show and hide the text box of the comment itself rather than the varying shades of blue of the text in the document that the comment is on. The shades of blue selected for the comments are pretty meaningless for our review, since the gray dot already tells you there's a comment there and I don't need a permanent blue highlight as a visual cue. It would also be nice if this "Show/Hide" button was in the right panel as well instead of having to navigate to the View tab at the top so you could have all comment features in a single place and not have to keep navigating at two different panels.
2) I see the comment panel can be filtered pretty well right now, but not being able to choose the order of how they are sorted limits the ability to find the comment you're looking for and it was a lot easier to just review the comments next to the document instead of the panel historically without having to click "Jump to location". Like the other users mentioned, maybe a visual cue here would be easier to bridge between the panel and the document of some kind. Most of our review would be easier to have comments grouped by document order as a default rather than most recent, because comments trickle in at different times that might relate to the same exact question. It'd be nice to be able to choose more than just "Entire document" or "Current section" too, because we often have review ongoing for multiple footnotes/sections that may reference each other, and it'd be great to be able to select multiple sections you want to see at one time.
3) Instead of having the gray dot disappear when you mark a comment as resolved, could it turn to another color or something so that you can tell what's open and what's resolved if you want to see all the comments at one time?
4) Not as important, but I wish you could resize the filter panel to be able to have it open and see more than just one or two comments appear at the bottom. It adds an extra step when trying to apply a filter that you have to show/hide your filter options manually every time and it would be nicer to be able to choose how large of a panel you want to see going vertically there when searching through comments.
1Agree! It is very important to us also to be able to view all comments at one time like we could in Classic. Comments is one of our primary communication tools that we use extensively. And now, I am asking my CFO to click on dots throughout the day to find comments addressed to him. And, to see if there are replies, we have to click on dots versus quickly scanning the page. Scanning the comment panel is not very helpful to us because the comments are not visually near the subject of the comment and therefore there is no context for the message in the comment. The panel can be used, but not efficiently and quickly as with Classic. Please add back the feature to Show/Hide all comments similar to Classic.
2Agree with everything everyone said here. Make the comments like Classic where they appear to the right and you can toggle show/hide, as well as scroll/jump to the next comment. The comment panel is not in document order and moving up and down through the comments in the comment panel doesn't associate with a document movement. Filtering is helpful but not as helpful as just...being able to see the comment next to the text without having to click the little dot or use the jump to location button on the panel and then clicking the little dot.
2Agree! This is our first 10-Q in Nextgen. It is really difficult to address multiple comments in 1 paragraph. I can see blue highlights, but find it hugely difficult to see exactly where in the paragraph the comment is refer. I open the bubble, and the comment displays right on top of the text, and cannot be moved. Please bring back the physical "link" or "line" we were familiar with in Classic. Also, we keep comments open until reviewers are able to see our responses, and we are find it difficult to navigate through the comments to determine if any comments remain unaddressed. We used to be able to scroll through the document in sequence to locate comments with no related response thread, but no have to open every "bubble" on the screen. It would be great to be able to filter on "comments with no thread" or something like that to locate unaddressed comments.
0Agree with all of these suggestions. Please make the comments visible without having to keep clicking through them. the filtering and other new functions are nice, but would rather have the "classic" presentation available to be able to easily see what needs to be addressed in the document. This new comment taskbar will actually make things HARDER instead of easier. 10-K season is coming up. Please fix ASAP.
0FIX THIS! Next Gen is a total downgrade from Classic.
1Mike This is great news! Thanks to the team at Workiva for adding this as a feature! One thing I'm unsure of: is there a way to toggle through comments in document order similar to how you can toggle through track changes? I know you could do this with Comments in Classic Documents but unsure of if that feature is also available with this new rollout?
0No problem, Anthony!
Good call. I checked and it seems this is found in the right-hand panel for Comments:
However, it doesn't seem to take you to the comment in the Document, but highlights it in the panel. I would agree, though, that maybe that same button could added to the View or Review tabs to toggle through.
