Pie Chart labels - improvement needed
CompletatoHi Workiva,
I really like the NextGen of Wdesk. However, please improve the properties of pie chart labels, especially where the labels are in relation to the corresponding slice in a pie chart.
In PowerPoint I can freely move those labels to where I like them to be. However, currently in Wdesk I can change the distance to the pie chart slice, but I cannot move the label left and right or up and down. In some of my reports I have pie charts where the labels are right in between two slices, so that for the reader of the report it can be difficult to figure out which label belongs to which slice.
It would be fantastic if you could fix/improve that option. Otherwise I am a big fan of NextGen.

Just in time for Q1, a recent release has pushed out many new enhancements to pie chart labels, including:
- Drag-and-drop labels anywhere in the chart area
- Use angled or straight connector styles, or remove them completely
- Adjust label padding and width to make room for longer labels
- Allow labels to overlap, even if there isn't enough space
- Show labels for slices with values of zero
- Automatically set your connectors to match the color of its slice
Thanks all for your feedback and patience, and give us a holler if you have any questions. Now go and enjoy some pie [charts]! 🥧
Hi Annett!
Thanks much for your feedback, and your kind words on next gen. Definitely made our Product Team's day 😊. The good news here is they are definitely looking into adding the ability to move around those chart labels, and you probably saw that I connected your request internally. You can follow along here, but I'll also keep this post updated going forward with new developments.
In the meantime, thanks again and hope you have a fabulous Friday! Cheers 🥂
0Mike Can you also add a request to allow the line connecting the chart label to the chart to be straight? We aren't fans of the line curling however it wants.
0I agree with these ideas as well! Also, is there a way to make the label text center aligned vs left aligned? I can't seem to figure that one out.
0Hi Mike and all - I have been working with next-gen Charts for a couple of quarters now. While the charts have been passable, our senior management has expressed displeasure with the lack of custom formatting options currently available. I echo and want to build on the following points:
1) We need the ability to just click and drag each pie slice's label for positioning. Having to rotate the whole chart into a sub-optimal position just to have the labels look OK is not a sustainable solution.
2) We need the option to have the connector lines be straight. An "L" shaped connector line that you could manipulate would also be greatly helpful for when you have many small slices close together.
3) The ability to add text boxes and images within a chart area would be super useful. For example, imagine a pie chart with two slices next to each other with the labels "Cars - 20%" and "Trucks - 35%". I want the ability to connect these two labels with lines to a text box (it would be manual) that says "Cars & Trucks - 55%".
Thanks very much Mike for all your help!
0Hi all!
As mentioned here, pie chart improvements have been earmarked and prioritized for late Q1 2021. As things progress, we'll keep you posted. Feel free to follow What's New for those updates as well. Thanks for your patience and feedback, and have a great day!
0Hi Mike, We are looking forward to pie-chart improvements as well, and we echo the sentiments expressed by other users. We rolled out Presentations to our IR team last quarter, and it seemed one of the biggest pain points was formatting pie chart labels. We could move the label in or out, but not center up or down. This resulting in the pie charts being re-created outside of WDesk at the last minute, not the best outcome.
Just checking: Is the rollout for pie chart improvements still on target for late Q1 2021?
0Hi Lizette,
Thanks for your additional comments here. I'll be sure to pass along your experience, for sure.
And yes, so far I've not heard anything in regards to these updates being pushed back. I'll circle back with that team to confirm for sure, though. Thanks again and chat with you soon!
