I am happy to report some awesome news. Recently released to the Workiva Platform was a right-click menu option to Delete Table!
You can also choose Delete Table under the "Delete" button in the Edit toolbar. I hope everyone is as excited as I am. As always, let us know if you have any questions or need anything else. Thanks so much for your feedback and patience along the way, and happy deleting!

Thanks for the question. I had to double-check myself, as it is a bit tricky, but to delete a table in a next generation Document, you have to highlight the entire table like you would a chunk of text and then hit Delete on your keyboard and it will remove the table. Here's a quick clip:

As far as deleting a table goes, that process has not changed as of yet in Wdesk. You have to highlight the entire table to get it to delete although I can certainly commiserate that sometimes that can be difficult to select the whole table in that method.

I found that if you put your cursor in the row or space right before a table, hit "delete", WDesk will ask you if you want to delete the table, you just answer "yes" and it will gone.
However, it won't let you delete a table if there are linked cells in the table. You have to first remove all the links.

I have another question.
I cannot seem to copy and paste a table from Classic to Next Gen. None of the formatting comes over correctly and it just pastes as text, not a table.
Can you help?

I haven't done this for a while. We have transitioned to Next Gen 6 months ago. But I seem to remember that table format does not copy over well from Classic to Next Gen. So chances are you have to fix up the table format to what how you want it.
But just to copy over the table contents, have you try first creating a new table in the Next Gen document with the same rows and columns and then copy the content over? You will still have to fix the formatting, but at least it is a table. The other option is if you have an existing table format that you like in the Next Gen document, copy over that table and then copy the content from the old Classic document.

Is this something that can be fixed? We have a lot of tables in our 10Qs and 10Ks and it would take a lot of time to manually re-create these tables.

Yes, this was already done. However there are some changes needed to the table such as adding rows and columns ect. It looks like just manually adding the additional rows and columns would have been a better option than trying to copy the whole format from Classic to Next Gen.

Mike, going forward, it would help to recognize that text tables and numeric tables are different beasts and require different interactions. I use text tables extensively, and it is a real wrestling match in WDesk. I need a way to insert and edit a text table it situ, without resorting to an underlying spreadsheet.

Thanks for responding, Mike. Going forward, WDesk should consider supporting text tables as a feature distinct from data tables. Take a look at how Word handles tables. While I don't expect anything so sophisticated -- Microsoft has been at this for 30 years -- the ability to create and format text tables are a feature that users will expect as WDesk becomes a broader corporate solution.
A few things come to mind:
- Extend control over table size, row height, and column width to standard units of measure (e.g., inches)
- Enhance auto distribution of row height and column width
- Provide specific table styles -- at a minimum, Table Text Bold, Table Text Non-Bold, Table Text Bullet, Table Text Number (for reasons that I won't get into here, using the Bullet / Number buttons are problematic in text tables
This is off the top of my head. As I say, you'll get a lot out of studying Word and then developing a systematic set of requirements. Admittedly, I'm coming from the power user perspective, and don't have a grasp of the architectural challenges implied by text tables.

I have tried both methods to delete a table and could not get either to work. Selecting the rows deleted the content, but not the table itself. I tried the cursor approach and got the Delete Table button, but nothing happened when I selected it. There are no links in the table.

I did. Nothing happened when I selected Delete Table. By clicking around, I was eventually able to select the entire table and get rid of it with the Delete key. However, I don't know what I did -- selecting by row didn't work.

I tried this again and got the prompt. However, something was left behind -- the space wasn't closed it was littered with green triangles. I undid, and tried again. This time, no Delete Table prompt at all. There is a real need for a clean, intuitive means of deleting a table. It's fundamental.

That certainly doesn't sound very great. To make sure I follow, when you deleted the table and got the prompt, afterwards the space where the table was still had green triangles? I agree though, we can certainly do more to make that process simpler for you.

NextGen seems to be moving backward in functionality in respect to imbedded tables. I have shared this with our CSR.
- Deleting the table...step backwards. Classic you could right click delete or highlight the entire table and delete.
- Importing tables does not seem to be as slick as Classic. Row heights and width seem to import truncated and not keep the sizing of the imported document, which causes way more attention and time formatting.
- Cannot auto size rows of an entire table. Huge step backward! In Classic you could highlight and entire table and double click a row or column and be assured that the text would auto fit the entity of the content (similar to excel). Now you have to go page by page, row by row and tends to be finicky and seems to revert back if row is between pages.
- Cannot delete multiple, unconnected rows at a time...again step backwards. This was a functionality of Classic.
I am sure I am missing other formatting nuances that seem to not have transferred over the NextGen. Please respond if I am doing something wrong.

I tend to agree here that deleting a table in next gen currently lacks a bit but the good news here is we're looking to improve that. The same is true for your second item too. Our Product Team is always looking improve the import process and I'm happy to share your insights with them.
Regarding your third point, I did some testing and I was able to auto-resize columns and rows by selecting the whole table and double-clicking between the columns. Are you seeing something different there?

For item 3 – auto sizing rows and columns.
Yes, this works if all data is on one page. I do not think this is the case if the data chart run across multiple pages. I imported 14 Schedule of Investments for our mutual fund complex and it seemed as if I had to resize each page of the doc and sometimes sized rows even reverted back to truncated cells when pushed on to a new page of the document.
In Classic there was a verify or check filing for errors tool. Is there a similar tool in NextGen?=
I do not have time to test again, will do next time we have a similar filing. Thanks!

Hi, all:
I was still having trouble deleting tables after trying the suggestions previously given, but they did not work for me either. However, what did work is that I navigated to the last column and last row of the table to delete and then dragged my cursor backwards from the end and upwards to the first row/first column at the beginning to highlight the table. Then I hit delete and the dialog box to delete the table showed up.
Hopefully, this works for others who were having this same problem without remedy.

Trey Edgerle - in next gen there is Document Health, which auto-checks as your are working. I'll check with our team if runs checks against what you are seeing, though.
