Chains Quick Reference Guide
MostradaThere are a lot of moving pieces when it comes to building data integrations and automations using Chains. This quick reference guide organizes frequently used resources when setting up new workspaces and building chains. If you’re brand new to Chains, we recommend taking the training outlined in the Getting Started with Chains Guide.
Workiva API grants
In order for chains to complete Workiva actions, they need a Workiva API grant. API grants can be tied to users or integration users, but all API grants must be tied to a real email address.
Follow these steps to set up an API grant and generate the secret or watch these videos:

Connections
Connections store credentials for making API calls to Workiva and third-party systems. Connections can be set up with CloudRunners for cloud-based data sources or GroundRunners for on-premises data systems.
Workiva connector walks through creating connections, including url overrides for workspaces in EU or APAC regions. Explore the list of available third-party connectors. And if you’re dealing with on-premises data, check out how to install and manage GroundRunners.

Chains
Chains are a series of actions being taken with commands. When building chains, these resources are commonly used:
- A list of all Workiva connector commands
- How to manage variables within chains at the workspace level
- Chains support center for support articles grouped by chains subtopics
