How can I assign alternative text to images within a table in Workiva?
No planeadaI’m currently exploring deeper in making our pdf more accessible and am having trouble finding a way to assign alternative text to images that are placed inside tables. Is this a known limitation of the platform, or is there a specific method for adding alt text to these images that I might be overlooking? Any guidance or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Xhan,I believe you are correct - I am not able to get the Object Properties panel to trigger on an image pasted into a table cell. I'm happy to put in an IDEA ticket for this table tagging improvement i.e images in tables. We are adding a figure tag to the image, so alternative text can be added fairly easily in post processing after export, but we will have to expose the right UI to allow entering the text in Workiva. Hang tight!0
With the new regulations under the EU Accessibility Act (EUAA), they require companies to ensure their PDFs are accessible, so this is now a priority for Workiva to implement
0Something new here?
0Hi Olga Stangeland,
Good news - The platform currently has ALT text for documents. Select any image in the document, and open Object Properties to add/view/edit Alt text.
Check out our support article for detailed instructions on How to Make your PDF's More Accessible!0Hi, I still cant't add alternative text to images that are placed inside tables.
0Hi Olga Stangeland,
Apologies here, you are correct. Workiva does not offer the ability to add alternative text to images inside tabled. There have been requests in the past for this functionality however, our product team has let me know, at this time there is no work for this feature planned. Here is their reasoning:
"In the case of background images and images in table cells, we made intentional decisions to not allow alt tags on those types of content. The reason for this is because those types of content should not have alt tags, according to accessibility tagging principles and best practices. Background images are considered decorative, and should not be used for conveying content. Screen readers typically skip over background images, so any information put into an alt tag would be missed by the screen reader. Using table cells to drive layout can create a barrier for screen readers. The rise of accessibility regulation will drive change in documents that rely on tables for layout. These pages, in general, will need to be converted to an object based layout approach. We've elected to not add this functionality to help users on the path of compliance."
Of course, we'll continue to monitor for additional requests and in case anything changes, we’ll reach back out to you!
0It seems pretty unlikely that using tables for layouts is going to go away anytime soon. That's virtually the only way to achieve relatively fine-tuned layouts with HTML documents. I would vote to Alt-text functionality to images within tables. Workiva's stated reasoning for not adding alt-text functionality to images in tables ("We've elected to not add this functionality to *help* users on the path of compliance." emphasis added) made me chuckle. "Help" is one way to put it.
