Automatic footnotes in Workiva always render at the bottom of the page in a single-column format. There is currently no native option to change the footnote column layout (e.g., to 2+ columns) or to place them directly under a specific table or in a specific column. This is a known limitation, with an active feature request in place.

    I've included some workarounds below:

Option 1: Manual Footnotes via Superscript
Instead of using the automatic footnote feature, manually create footnotes using the Superscript option:
    1. Double-click into the table cell
    2. Enable the Superscript option
    3. Add the superscript/footnote number in the cell
    4. Repeat to add the matching superscript below the table
    5. Unselect superscript and write the footnote text normally

Note: Superscript only works in cells containing text — it does not work in cells with numbers only.

Option 2: Mix Auto + Manual Footnotes
Use automatic footnotes where they work well, and manually create footnotes (via superscript) for table-specific entries that need to appear in a specific location or column.
