Can I copy an xbrl outline section from one document to another?
AnsweredWe had to add a new note to our Form 10K that I now have to add to our 10Q. Since I already did the work on building out the outline section for this note, it would be nice if I didn't have to do it again in the 10Q. I know within the same document I can copy and paste outline sections, but that doesn't seem to work when doing it from one document to another. Is there an easy way to do this?

Hi Sara Johnson Yes you are able to 'disable' and XBRL Outline Section and/or Sub-Section with a few clicks. Right-click on the Section/Sub-section and select the 'Edit' option. From here a window will pop up that contains a checkbox to "Exclude this section from the XBRL Outline". When this is checked the outline section with disable and not be included in the XBRL Generation Process. The section will still be available in the outline to recall but will have a different format to indicate it is disabled. Note: If you disable this at the top level section it will automatically disable all the sub-sections.
Hi Michelle!Yes, you can copy XBRL outline sections to another document, so long as both documents are in the same taxonomy, i.e., both "US GAAP 2021" or both "US GAAP 2021 (DEI 2021 Q4)", etc. To copy, just click on the outline section or subsection and CTRL+C. Then go to desired location and CTRL+V. Let me know if that does not work or you have any further questions.Thank you!0Thank you. I just realized that my issue was that I was clicking on the open space in the outline when I click control V, vs. actually clicking on an existing outline item. So, I guess the issue was that I wasn't selecting the location.
0Is there a better way of "disabling" a section of the XBRL outline instead of deleting the part of the outline that isn't used in a current period document? This quarter we are transitioning our 2022 10-K into a 1Q23 10-Q by setting the 10-K sections of the document to non-printing and disabling the XBRL on the document side. When we run a full XBRL generation, we have close to 500 "blue" errors related to tags on the XBRL outline not have a corresponding XBRL tag in the document. The solution, in the past, was to delete the part of the XBRL outline not in use and then copy from a previous filed document when we need them again. The negative here is that we will be our process going forward, and like you said, you can only copy XBRL outlines in when the taxonomy are the same.
