Hello and welcome to the Community, Shree!
Great question. I was doing some testing to see what might stick, and have a few results for you.
First, while you can't format the suffix itself you could insert a symbol as your suffix which would work. However, you would likely be limited on what symbol to use. In Workiva, you can insert some preset symbols from the the Insert > Symbol menu. From there, I tested with a TM (™) symbol. You first do need to insert the symbol into your file, then cut and paste that symbol as your suffix.
I do see there is some space between the superscript ™ and the value, however. You could insert other symbols not found in Workiva by copying from another source and pasting them into the suffix box in Workiva.
Other than that, the other method I've seen commonly employed is to use a concatenate formula. Something like =A1&"™" to create the combined value. Again, using a symbol is probably the best bet there as formatted text won't flow through a formula reference.
I'll keep digging, and also see if our Product Team is looking at having formatted suffixes, but certainly let me know what questions you have for me on the above or if you need anything else.
Thanks again for your contributions and have a great rest of your day!
0Following up on this question, I am trying to make (3), reference to a footnote, superscript in a worksheet . . . is there a way to do that?
0Hi Nancy!
If I follow, you are looking to reference a value that is ⁽³⁾ and have that show up in the same formatting?
If so, you'd need to insert a symbol and/or unicode value in the Spreadsheet. To do this, you'd first want to insert the symbol in you Workiva Spreadsheet. There is a superscript 3 option available there. Activate a cell then under the Insert menu choose symbol, and next search "superscript" and you should see what is available. The options for 1, 2, and 3 are there for numbers. Sadly, there's no parenthesis. Choose the ³ and insert into your cell.
Next, you'll need to create a unicode in an outside source and copy it into Workiva. The best way on Windows is to use Word. To insert a unicode there, you use the keystroke Alt+CODE where the code is the character you want. For superscript left and right parenthesis, it is 207D and 207E. So you'd type Alt+207D and the result that should show up is ⁽. Here's a link to those items:
- https://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/207e/index.htm
Do the same for the other and then you can copy and paste those values into your Spreadsheet cell too so you left with this:
Now, you can link and/or reference this value and the result will be the same superscript look.
Does this help achieve what you are looking for? Let me know what questions you have, or if I've missed the mark entirely.
Thanks for your contributions and have a great day!
was able to do th0Thanks for the quick response and suggestions, Mike . . . I need superscript formatted numbers higher than 3 so I am not sure the "insert" tool will work. I will look at reformatting the footnote references in our tables. It is a shame that the superscript text formatting is no longer available.
0You're very welcome, Nancy :)
I wanted to clarify that the formatting options for superscript (and subscript) are available.
I should add too that they would flow through from a source cell, but would not flow through a cell reference. For example, if I link a Spreadsheet cell with the value Text⁽³⁾ the resulting destination link would allow the formatting through and show up as Text⁽³⁾. Whereas if reference a cell that has the superscript formatting of Text⁽³⁾ the resulting value would be Text(3).
In addition, if you do need the unicode option there are characters for superscripts 4 through 9, which is found here: https://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/block/superscripts_and_subscripts/list.htm
Hopefully that added info might get you what you need. Let me know if I can answer any questions on the above, or you need anything else. Thanks again for reaching out and happy Thursday!
0Thank you, Mike!! Not sure why I didn't see it before unless I had selected the cell and not on the text in the cell. All is good . . . Happy Thursday to you, as well!!
0Hi Mike - I need to add the superscript (1) to the end of a date. I tried the above but the cell doesn't retain the date format. I would like to have a date in a header roll forward and retain a superscript footnote (1). any ideas?
0Hmm... I see what you mean. When I try to add a symbol of a superscript, it alters my date to the datevalue. Lemme see what magic I can do.
I did get this to work in a few steps. First, somewhere in your Spreadsheet or Document insert the superscript 1 symbol (¹). This is simply so you can copy it and paste it later. You can get this symbol from the Insert Symbol menu. You could even copy it from here too, come to think of it.
Next step is to link the date desired into the header. Once linked, from the Formats panel, choose Custom Suffix and paste the superscript value in.
The result should looks something like this:
Does that achieve what you are looking for? Let me know if I've missed the mark at all or you have any follow-ups for me. Thanks for reaching out, and happy linking in the meantime!
0Your magic worked! I used the ( ) symbols you provided previously to achieve exactly what I needed.
