    Hi Cindy 👋,

In next gen, you do not need to assign headers or footers, per se, but they are more easily edited. For example, as you point out, in Classic you had to double-click inside the header/footer and then select the one your wanted from the dropdown and/or create a new one, whereas in next gen the header and footer is access by simply clicking inside and is more robust, allowing links in the header/footer and tables too, something Classic could not support.

When you click inside header/footer in next gen, the properties panel will open on the right-hand side with options. You can also go to Edit > Format > Header (or Footer) to open the same window. On this panel you have the following options:

You should see some familiar faces there in this new interface, but this is how you edit that instead of the drop-down or the section properties in Classic.

Does this make sense? Let me know if I've missed the mark or you have any questions on the above. Hope you have a great rest of your day. Cheers!
