I'm a bit late to the party and by now you're likely aware, but just wanted to update this post for future reference that this option was made available in Workiva. From the right click menu, you should see the choice Turn into Source Link.
Thanks much for your patience and feedback along the way. We couldn't have done it without you!
Hi Erik!
Thanks for the question. I do have a quick solution for you.
While there's not a direct way to this, like a right-click option or button in a panel, one way to do this would be in two parts. Here's the steps I took to move those links.
First, in your Source, perform a CUT, i.e. CTRL+X, of the the data. This will cut your source links so we can move them to a new location. Next, in the current Destination, perform a PASTE, i.e. CTRL+V, of the data. You'll get a pop-up about pasting over the existing links. You'll want to confirm that and proceed. After a few moments, you'll now see the blue links in the new location. However, you're only halfway done. Next, perform a COPY, i.e. CTRL+C, of the new Source data and then PASTE into your Destination location, i.e. your previous Source. When you paste, choose the option to Create Links. You should now have your links moved.
Hopefully this helps and makes sense. Do let me know what questions you have, or if you need anything else. Thanks again for your contributions and have a great rest of your day!
0Hi Mike,
This 'Make Source Link' (1st capture) functionality is something we have made excessive use of in the past. Will this eventually be available in Next Gen (see 2nd capture)?
The 'two parts' solution just would be practical as we would also need to move multiple source links.
1st Capture - Classic
2nd Capture - Next Gen
1Hi Erik Lyndain!
Ah yes, I recall that functionality. Very useful, indeed.
Currently this is not yet there in next gen as of yet. Our Product Team is working on implementing this feature, however, but I don't have a timeline for release. I've connected your request with our Product Team and will get back to you here with any new updates going forward. You can follow with your requests here as well: https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/requests/47300
In the meantime, give me a holler if there are any questions for me or you need anything else. Thanks much and chat soon!
0Hey Mike, any updates on this, 9 months since the original question was asked? Why get rid of such a useful feature ... and why is it taking so long to bring back?
0Hi Bassem!
I took a quick look and sadly there's been little progress made on this request and so far it remains only a proposed suggestion. There were some features in Classic that didn't make it over to the next gen platform, including this one. Some of those decisions came down to complexity of the development and overall use of the feature. While I would agree this is a useful feature, so far we've not got much traction on adding it back, though it does remain as something we'd consider.
Our Product Team does take into consideration the popularity and desires for feature requests found here on the Community, so to help gain traction I've added your comments to our internal ticket and would definitely encourage any others members to vote up this suggestion and/or add a comment with your own sentiments and use case. Each little bit helps.
Thanks for reaching out and do let me know what questions you have. Cheers!
0I agree that adding this feature back would be very helpful!!! I just tried to consolidate and streamline some of our links for new disclosures, and it was VERY time consuming without the "make source link" function. I've got more i need to do, but I would prefer to wait until that function is available again to save HOURS of work. PLEASE bring it back!
1Hi Mike,
I've fielded numerous internal requests from multiple departmental workspace teams for this functionality and based on your original reply "Our Product Team is working on implementing this feature, however, but I don't have a timeline for release" I have kept their hopes alive.
Your latest comments to Bassem are very disappointing and as stated my Michelle this functionality can be an enormous time saver.
I don't feel we should need to canvas the community for additional support for a feature that we were previously using and expecting to be delivered in next gen.
Can you please take this up again with the Product Team and clarify precisely why this implementation has been held up?
Thanks, Erik
1Hi Erik,
First, thanks for your candor here. This definitely helps paint a picture of the true customer need for this functionality.
Secondly, I do apologize for the added confusion caused there and I would agree, it shouldn't be a heavy lift to supply your feedback, for sure. Your insights here will definitely help us fill in the gaps with our feedback intake and feature prioritization process.
That being said, I will for sure bring this up to our Product Team for a more solid answer and understanding of why and where this sits today. Thanks again and talk soon!
0Circling back here, in chatting with our team that works on the linking, they did mention that though you can make a broken link a source link today, they recognize the lack of parity with doing so with healthy links is a gap. It has been a difficult engineering problem to solve in next gen, which is why it still lags behind the other parity options.
The good news is the team has made some headway to better understand the technical efforts required and from their point of view, this functionality is something they'd like to implement in 2021, but I don't know as of yet which quarter they'd be able to fit it into.
I'll do some moving of these requests on my end so they better line up with that body work described above, and share your use cases and insights. Thanks again for your honest feedback and let me know what other questions you have in the meantime. Cheers!
