To assist customers and partners with the transparency obligations of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act, see Article 50), the Mark document as AI-assisted setting is available for files you export from the Workiva platform in a supported file format.
When you export a file from the Workiva platform, the Mark document as AI-assisted setting adds machine-readable metadata to the exported file. The setting only adds metadata to the document properties, so it doesn't change your document's content or formatting.
Please work with your legal or compliance team to determine whether the EU AI Act and its transparency obligation apply to your organization.
Requirements
- Owner permission is required to update file properties.
- This setting is available in Documents and Spreadsheets.
Mark a document as AI-assisted
This setting isn't selected by default. Once you select it, every export of the document in a supported file format includes the metadata.
- In the document, open the File menu.
- Select Properties > Document > General.
-
Under Preferences, select Mark document as AI-assisted.
Note: Workiva doesn't select this setting automatically, even when you use Workiva AI to edit the document. If your document contains AI-generated content, you may choose to select the setting yourself.
- Click Save Changes.
The setting is saved with the document, so it applies to exports by anyone with access to it.
Frequently asked questions
Which file types support the addition of the metadata?
This setting can be applied to PDF, DOCX, XLSX, XHTML, and XHTML4 file exports. This setting does not apply to other formats, including CSV and EDGAR (.htm).
Will the setting change my exported file?
No. The setting applies metadata to the exported file only. It doesn't add visible text, watermarks, or formatting changes.
What information does the metadata include?
It includes a single industry-standard property from the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) Digital Source Type vocabulary. The property indicates that the file contains AI-generated content. It doesn't include user names, prompts, or which parts of the document AI produced.
The following table shows the full entry written to the file.
| Name | Value |
|---|---|
Iptc4xmpExt:DigitalSourceType |

How can I view the metadata?
Depending on the file type, you can find the metadata in the exported file's properties or source code, or with a metadata viewing tool. For help, contact your IT team or Customer Success Manager.
What happens if I deselect the setting?
Future exports won't include the metadata. Files you've already exported keep it.
