This error occurs when a filing includes a future date in the Period of report field that is not allowed by the SEC for that form type. The SEC enforces automated validation rules, and submissions that don’t meet these requirements are rejected.

Special case: 10-D filings

- In this case, the ABS-EE end period is used instead
- If submitted alone, future dates are not allowed
Things to know
- SEC validation rules are enforced at submission and cannot be overridden
- Time of submission (ET) impacts whether certain filings (like 8-K) accept future dates
- Always verify the Period of report before submitting to avoid delays
