Floating Objects are a key part of Workiva’s Designed Reporting Capabilities. Read on to understand how you can use XBRL Tagging Capabilities within, and on, this type of content.
You can create XBRL Facts, Footnotes and Label References within selections contained in Floating Objects. You can also create XBRL Facts directly on certain types of Floating Objects. This article assumes you are familiar with the way to tag XBRL with in-line content, i.e. content that is not floating. If you are not familiar with this, it may be best to first go through our other articles in the Tag XBRL Section of Workiva Support.
XBRL Tagging within Floating Objects
XBRL Facts and XBRL Footnotes can be created on any selected text within a floating Text-Box, Shape or a Table Cell in a Floating Table. Make your selection and create the XBRL Fact or Footnote as you would with any in-line content. Once the Fact or Footnote has been created, you can interact with it from the XBRL Fact Details Panel or Manage Footnote experience.
If the taxonomy allows, you can also create XBRL Label References on Table Cells contained in floating tables. This functionality works that same as it does for inline tables.
Tagging Floating Objects with XBRL Facts
Certain Floating Objects may need to be tagged as XBRL Facts in addition to the individual selections within them. For example, you may need to Text Block tag a Floating Table. In this case, you would not tag the cells but instead the table itself. To do this, you would select the table in the same way you would if you needed to move it, and create the XBRL Fact. This will create the fact on the table, and you can proceed with adding the details from the Fact Details Panel.
In addition to tagging Floating Tables, you can also select a Floating Chart or Floating Image to create XBRL Facts.
Using "Combine if Duplicate"
Depending on how you have your Document set up and what you need to tag, you may need to use the Combine if Duplicate functionality for facts, found in the Fact Details Panel.
As an example, you might have a Text Block fact that needs to include the content of a Text-Box and a Floating table. To accomplish this, you need to create a fact on the selected content in the text box. Then, create an XBRL Fact on the Floating Table. After make sure the facts are tagged identically, mark each fact to Combine if Duplicate. Then, when you generate the XBRL the many facts will be combined into a single fact, maintaining the read order of the content.
