What's a geofence?
From a technical standpoint, a geofence is a virtual geographic radius centered around a location. In the Workiva Platform, geofencing is used as a precaution against attackers impersonating a platform user.
What does this mean?
When you log into Workiva, your physical location (city/state/country + latitude and longitude) is automatically determined by your IP address and stored in the system. If at any time during your Workiva session your IP address changes and your new IP address is determined to be too far from its previous location, the Workiva Platform will automatically log you out.
While the geofence range for the Workiva Platform is generally both large enough for users who are moving within an office to be unaffected and small enough that we can effectively catch potential attacks, there are instances where your IP address might change intentionally, which can cause a 'false positives', and prompt a geofencing restriction message. All that it means is that you will need to reauthenticate your connection to the Workiva Platform. You will not have lost any of your data or work.
