XBRL calculation relationships validate your document’s calculations by making sure the line items and their total are correct. Easily manage all aspects of calculation relationships directly the Fact Details panel or the XBRL Outline.
Note: When you import an existing XBRL outline, calculation relationships are included and appear in both the XBRL outline and fact details for the total.
Create a calculation in Fact Details
This is the easiest and most common way to create a calculation relationship. You will select the calculation’s total in the document, start the calculation relationship in Fact Details, then select the contributors directly in the document. This also adds it to the XBRL outline.
Important: Make sure your contributor concepts have the same period type as the total. They should be all Instant period types or all Duration period types.
To build a calculation in Fact Details:
- 1
- Open the document, click Show XBRL, and select an XBRL profile if one is not already selected.
- 2
- Select the calculation’s total value in the document to open its fact details.
- 3
- Click + Create in Fact Details. This starts the calculation with the total.
- 4
- In the document, select all cells with line items that contribute to the total for this calculation. To change the selection, select a different group of cells. You can also drop concepts from the XBRL outline or choose Select Concept to search for and select new contributors from the Concept Selector.
- 5
- Click Done and select the outline section this calculation relationship belongs in.
- 6
- Click Add to presentation to finish.
Create a calculation in the XBRL outline
When building a calculation relationship in the XBRL outline, add the total concept first, then nest all contributors under it. This will also add it to the fact details for the calculation relationship total.
Important: Make sure your contributor concepts have the same period type as the total. They should be all Instant period types or all Duration period types.
To build a calculation in the XBRL outline:
- 1
- Open the document, click Show XBRL, and select an XBRL profile if one is not already selected.
- 2
- Go to the calculation section of the outline where you want to create the calculation.
- 3
- Right click and select Add Child.
- 4
- In the Concept Selector, search for the fact for the calculation total, select it, and click Apply.
- 5
- Select the newly added calculation relationship total in the XBRL outline, right click and select Add Child.
- 6
- In the Concept Selector, search for a calculation contributor, select it, and click Apply to add to the calculation. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each contributor.
Set the calculation weight
When a calculation relationship total does not have a balance type, you need to manually set the calculation weight for each contributor. Calculations without balance types include increase (decrease) concepts for monetary item types, percentages, and shares.
The calculation weight is automatically set for calculations when the calculation total has a balance type.
The calculation weight for each contributor is either positive (+) or negative (-) in the calculation total.
- Use a positive (+) calculation weight when adding a contributor to the total.
- Use a negative (-) calculation weight when subtracting a contributor from the total.
To find the correct calculation weight for each contributor, you can use predefined calculation relationships in the taxonomy as a guide. For monetary concepts, use the balance type of the contributor to find the correct calculation weight for each calculation relationship contributor.
To manually set the calculation weight:
- 1
- Right-click a contributor in the calculation.
- 2
- Select either Make Positive or Make Negative.
Note: The options are disabled when the total has a balance type.
