Description

Use this function to round a number to the nearest multiple of a specified value.

MROUND is useful for rounding numbers to specific increments, such as the nearest five cents in financial calculations or the nearest quarter-hour in time tracking.

 

Syntax

MROUND(number, multiple)

 

Inputs

This function accepts the following arguments:

number Yes The number you want to round. A real number, a reference to a cell containing a real number, or a formula which results in either of these. 
multiple Yes The multiple to which you want to round the number. Any non-zero number.

Round a number to the nearest specified multiple. =MROUND(A2, 5)

This formula works in the following manner:

  • MROUND(: This is the function itself.
  • A2: The number argument, referencing A2 (which contains 27).
  • 5: The multiple argument.
  • The formula rounds 27 to the nearest multiple of 5. Since 27 is closer to 25 than to 30, it rounds down.

Result: 25.
Round a number to the nearest tenth. =MROUND(A3, 0.1)

This formula works in the following manner:

  • MROUND(: This is the function itself.
  • A3: The number argument, referencing A3 (which contains 3.14159).
  • 0.1: The multiple argument.
  • The formula rounds 3.14159 to the nearest multiple of 0.1. Since it is closer to 3.1 than to 3.2, it rounds down.

Result: 3.1.
Round a negative number to the nearest specified multiple. =MROUND(A4, 2)

This formula works in the following manner:

  • MROUND(: This is the function itself.
  • A4: The number argument, referencing A4 (which contains -13.7).
  • 2: The multiple argument.
  • The formula rounds -13.7 to the nearest multiple of 2. Since -13.7 is closer to -14 than to -12, it rounds to -14.

Result: -14.
Round a number to the nearest quarter (0.25). =MROUND(A5, 0.25)

This formula works in the following manner:

  • MROUND(: This is the function itself.
  • A5: The number argument, referencing A5 (which contains 0.47).
  • 0.25: The multiple argument.
  • The formula rounds 0.47 to the nearest multiple of 0.25. Since 0.47 is closer to 0.50 than to 0.25, it rounds up.

Result: 0.5.
Round a number to the nearest nickel (0.05). =MROUND(15.78, 0.05)

This formula works in the following manner:

  • MROUND(: This is the function itself.
  • 15.78: The number argument.
  • 0.05: The multiple argument.
  • The formula rounds 15.78 to the nearest multiple of 0.05. Since 15.78 is closer to 15.80 than to 15.75, it rounds up.

Result: 15.80.

 

Notes

  • The result of MROUND has the same sign as number.
  • If number and multiple have different signs, MROUND returns a #NUM! error.
  • If multiple is 0, MROUND returns a #DIV/0! error.
  • MROUND rounds up when the remainder of the division by multiple is exactly half the value of multiple.
  • MROUND differs from ROUND in that while MROUND rounds to a specified multiple of the supplied value, ROUND rounds to a specified number of decimal places.

 

Tips

  • MROUND is useful for rounding prices to the nearest sub-unit (cent/nickel/quarter/etc.); it is also useful in time tracking to round time to the nearest quarter-hour or half-hour.
  • You can combine MROUND with other functions such as SUM or AVERAGE for more complex calculations.
  • Be aware of potential rounding errors when working with very small multiples due to precision limitations.
