Character spacing allows you to increase and decrease the space between characters in a document, spreadsheet, or presentation. This can be used to improve readability, give a more modern look to your content, or control the text layout on a page. In this article, you’ll learn how to modify character spacing from the toolbar and within style guides.

Set character spacing in a style guide
If you’re a file Owner, you can set the style in a style guide. To do this, you can either create a new style guide and set the character spacing, or you can update an existing style guide.
Note: Making changes to an existing style guide will update the content that has that style applied.
To set character spacing in the style guide:
- From the Edit toolbar, click the Styles menu.
- Select Edit Style Guide to open the style guide editor.
-
In the Spacing section of the Style Editor, apply the character spacing changes you wish to make.
Note: You can select the lock icon to prevent users from making changes to the character spacing while editing content that has this style applied.
- Select Publish to apply changes to the style guide.
