Paste a number from Excel to Workiva Sheet without losing decimals
BeantwortetWe need to copy and paste numbers from an Excel spreadsheet into a Workiva sheet. In Excel, the numbers are displayed without decimal places (the underlying values contain decimals, but they are rounded for display purposes).
When we paste these numbers into a Workiva sheet, the decimal values are lost. For example, in our Excel spreadsheet, a value is displayed as 27, but the actual underlying value is 26.5. When we paste this number into our Workiva sheet, the value becomes 27. If we then format the cell to display one decimal place, the result is 27.0 instead of 26.5.
Is there a way to paste numbers from Excel into Workiva without losing the underlying decimal values, regardless of the rounding or display format used in Excel?
Thank you!

Bonjour Jean-Philippe!
Thanks for the question. Happy to help here. When you copy an entire cell from Excel (where the display is rounded, e.g., 27 but the underlying value is 26.5), Workiva receives the displayed/rounded value, not the underlying one. This is a known behavior — Workiva pastes what Excel exposes via the clipboard, which reflects the cell's display format.Recommended Workaround
To preserve the underlying decimal value, follow these steps in Excel before copying:- 1. Double-click into the source cell in Excel (enter edit mode)
- 2. Highlight the value shown in the formula bar (the actual underlying value, e.g.,
26.5) - 3. Copy the highlighted value
- 4. Paste into the destination cell in Workiva
This bypasses Excel's display formatting and copies the raw underlying number directly.Important NoteChanging the Workiva cell format after pasting a rounded value (e.g., from 27.0 to one decimal place) will not recover the lost decimal — the underlying value is already stored as 27. You must paste the correct value before formatting the cell.Additional Context
- - Meta-settings such as "treat numbers as thousands/millions" are not supported when copying from Excel to Workiva. A value displayed as "1" (representing 1,000,000) will paste as 1.
- - Workiva Sync works similarly — it transfers only cell contents, not formatting or precision metadata.
If I've missed the mark or you have any follow-ups on the above, please let me know and I'll be happy to assist.
0Thank you for your answer. Do you know whether there are any plans on the roadmap to add an option to paste the underlying value instead of the displayed value? It would be great to have the ability to paste the underlying value regardless of the formatting or rounding applied in Excel.0Hi Jean-Philippe!
Currently I am not seeing anything on the roadmap for this enhancement but am happy to pass along your feedback to our developers. We'll keep you apprised of any updates going forward there but do give us a holler if you have any follow-ups.
