Designed Reporting features are a part of an extension that's available to all solutions. Reach out to your Customer Success Manager to get access.
With Workiva’s Design Reporting features, highly-designed compliant documents, like Proxy Statements, can now be created within the Workiva platform, tagged with iXBRL and filed with the SEC.
Design features can be used with any filing document to give the filed documents the same look and feel as the Workiva document editor.
Features included in Designed Reporting
Designed Reporting will allow documents to be filed with background images or colors and the ability to file a document with a fixed width in EDGAR.

Filing a document with design features
Floating objects and background images are only supported for EDGAR when the document property is set for EDGAR output to page view.
To file a document:
- Make sure you're in a workspace with Designed Reporting features enabled.
- In the Edit tab, click Properties.
- Select Document.
In the Preferences section, check EDGAR output to page view for any SEC fileable document type.
Note: The EDGAR output to page view document property is only available for Designed Reporting workspaces and you're filing a SEC document.
XBRL and Design Reporting
XBRL tagging is currently not supported for floating content. This involves tagging floating objects individually or including floating objects in a text block tag. To learn more, read Designed Reporting - Floating Object and XBRL.
EDGAR filing limitations
There are some EDGAR filing limitations to keep in mind that can affect the filing's design.
- Filings can only have up to 500 exhibits/graphics.
- The filing size limit for most filings is 200 MB.

EDGAR only supports the use of .jpg and .gif image file formats. SVG image file formats can be included in a designed document, but they'll be converted to .gif during the filing process.
- Converting to a .gif will result in some loss of image fidelity.
- Workiva shapes are SVGs and will also be converted to .gif. Rectangles are excluded from this conversion.
- .gif images don't support partial transparency. Any background fill in a shape that has any transparency will result in a fully transparent shape with no color fill. However, rectangles are an exception to this and can have transparent background fills.
- EDGAR doesn't support embedded fonts.
- As a result, using non-web safe fonts can impact the layout of text on a filed document. It's recommended that web safe fonts are used for filed documents when using Designed Reporting elements.
