Tracked changes in next gen documents
已完成When working in next gen documents w/ tracked changes on, it is difficult to review changes because deleted text and other similar changes are only shown in the side panel (rather than directly in the text). Short of clicking through each individual change or running a formal blackline, there is no quick way to see these deletions. Ideally, this functionality would work similar to Word with the deletions right in the text.

Great news all! A recent release to Workiva has now made Inline Track Changes available for use. 🎉 🤜 🤛 🥂
Thank you all for your patience and feedback. Let us know if you have questions about this enhancement, or you need anything else. Have a super day!
Ryan my team agrees completely! Loved the Classic version where, similar to Word, you could "see" the individual edits within the document. Hope this feature returns soon.
3Would also be nice if you could see which user authored or deleted text in track changes similar to how you can see authorship in next gen spreadsheets. Thanks!
4Thanks for all your insights! You've probably seen, but I've connected your requests internally with our Product Team so you can follow along there, but I'll be sure to keep you updated here if we have any follow-ups for you. Let me know too if you have any questions. Thanks again and chat with you soon. Cheers!
0Without this functionality, our team is going to have to stay in the Classic version for now. We need to see the tracked changes right in the document, not in the sidebars. And, we too need to see which user authored or deleted text
0Margaret, thanks for reiterating this need :)
0Hi, everyone! My name is Mallory Earll and I'm the product manager for Documents. I really appreciate all of your feedback around this topic. Making track changes improvements is something we want to revisit and discuss this summer. I would love to include all of you in our discovery and see what we need to do to satisfy your needs and ensure a positive experience for you. If any of you are interested in partnering, I can follow up with you in 2-3 months to discuss further. Thanks again, all!
0Hi Mallory - I'd participate in this.
0Mallory, I would participate in this as well.
0Mallory, I can participate as well
0Hello Mallory, can you please notify me on the status of these updates? We use track changes for our annual financial statement process so not having the in-line track changes is going to slow down the processes. Thanks!
0I got you Magdalena Galik! Your request is linked to our ongoing ticket, and you can follow along here: https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/requests.
1Hi, my team is transitioning to next gen this quarter and noticed this as well. We would also prefer to have any deleted texts show up as inline tracked changes. Any updates on this functionality?
3Hi Jason!
No new updates, per se, on this feature. It does remain on the radar but no timeline has been set as of yet. I've shared your feedback with the team and connected your request as well, so you should get more automated updates. In the meantime, give a holler if I can answer any other questions for ya or you need anything else. Thanks again and have a great day!
0Mike - please connect me to the updates as well. Today I spent 5-6 hours accepting tracked changes that normally would have only taken 1-2 hours in classic In addition to not being able to see them in line (which slowed things down), next gen was sooooo slooooooow in between acceptions; I assume because it was trying to update the tracked changes panel on the right in real time. So painful! And very inefficient considering all the time I had to sit and wait for things to "catch up" while it was frozen/working. Please get "in-line" back ASAP and fix the speed issue. I'm new to next gen but never had speed issues like that with classic when accepting tracked changes; just switching between different sections would take foreveeeeeer.
0Hi Kat Scherer you got it! You can follow along here.
Inline track changes is definitely planned, but as of yet there's no timeline for release. You feedback is much appreciated here and will help our team gauge prioritization.
As far as a slow speed and performance, that's certainly unexpected for sure. There are definitely things we can check, including system performance and connections speeds. We'd suggest reaching out to your CSM or 24/7 Support and have them run some diagnostics to see if we can find any possible culprits and improve your experience so far as the speed is concerned.
In the meantime, give me a holler if there are any questions, or you need anything else. Thanks again and have a great day!
0Hello, everyone! I will be sure to let you know when my team begins discovery on this later this summer and include you if you'd like. We'd like to begin work on this toward the end of 2020 but I don't have any firm ETAs to give you at this time. Thank you for your patience!
0Hello Everyone,
Is there any update available for this topic as well as being able to export tracked changes to PDF? Our company heavily relies on this functionality for internal and external review and it would be incredibly difficult to go through a 10-K process with the current functionality in NextGen documents. It would be very useful to have this implemented in advance of the end of the year so that it can be tested by users and provide us ample time to provide feedback. Also, it would help ensure a successful rollforward of our 10-K (which we normally perform early in Q4 2020.
0Hi Colton Fenton!
The ability to export track changes in a PDF for next gen files is on the future roadmap to be added, but there's no specific timeline for release as of yet. This request is mentioned here, and I've connected your feedback with the team as well. Thanks for sharing your input and we'll keep you updated with a more definitive release schedule once this feature is more prioritized by our Product Team.
In the meantime, give me a holler if you have any questions or you need anything else. Thanks much for your continued patience and feedback and happy Monday!
0Sounds like the Workiva team is well aware that this is an issue but we are going through our first filing using Next Gen and it has been incredibly difficult to navigate through the changes. I cannot imagine going through our 10-K filing without this functionality. Our 10-K is more than 500 pages. I hope there is a way to fast track an improvement to the current functionality.
1I also am one that needs to be able to see track changes and be able to export those revisions to PDF. Without that functionality, I may have to go back to Word to do all my edits.
0This is a primary reason we also put off transitioning to NextGen. Tracked Changes is one our our primary communication tools that we use extensively. The Next Gen version of tracked changes is very difficult for the reviewer to follow the flow and context of what was removed when you have to look over at the side panel. The blue vertical lines in the left margin indicating a tracked change has been replaced with small superscript dots. The vertical lines in the margin allowed the reader to quickly scan the document for any tracked changes. Now the reader must carefully scan through every sentence looking for a tiny dot. Also, in some instances in our document, when we delete and insert in the same sentence, only one dot appears indicating an insertion. There reader does not know to also search in the side panel for a deletion. Our process is now very inefficient and more time consuming compared to Classic. Please add back the Show/Hide ALL tracked changes within the document similar to Classic. And, please add back the ability to hover and see authorship. Thanks!
0Our team relies on being able to see the track changes in the main body of the document including who made them as part of our review and communication of edits performed by others. We have already transitioned to Next Gen and were not aware the same functionality of track changes as Classic did not exist in Next Gen, which is quite surprising. I agree with many of the previous comments posted. Please add back the same functionality of track changes in Classic where it is in the main body of the document and displays ownership of each edit. Thanks!
0At my old job we used the classic version and at my new job we just migrated to Next Gen. I am shocked at how horrible this functionality is in Next Gen. It is going to make reviewing language changes so much more time consuming and that is time I do not have. I have no idea why anyone thought this was a better way to see tracked changes PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!. I am actually seeing if we can somehow use the classic version instead.
1Track Changes is very important for our team as well. Wondering if there's a target date for when there will be similar functionality to classic documents?
0Thank you to the Workiva team to getting this updated prior to the end of the year for calendar year end 10-K companies! I do have one additional question - tracked change exporting looks like it is working as intended, but is there any plan or update to be able to show tracked deletions inline in the document (similar to how they used to be shown in the classic documents)? It is really challenging right now to be able to easily see the tracked deletions, outside of using the pane to the right then piecing the changes together and/or exporting a tracked changes version of the specific section to review what is showing as a deletion.
0Snap Colton Fenton, your comment got hung up in a spam filter errantly. Sorry for that.
To answer your question, yes, totally. Inline Track Changes is what we call i on our end and we have prioritized to have that released this quarter. Inline track changes is more inline (pun intended) with what your previous experience was in Classic. I'm happy to add you to the list of interested parties. 😀
In the meantime, give me a holler if you have any questions. Thanks as always, and have a super day!
0Samesies Anthony Miller. Totally dropped the ball on your there. As mentioned, we are targeting a release for Q1 2021 on this enhancement.
