Ability to link a hyperlink
We would like the ability to create a link from source content that is, or that includes, a hyperlink. Two example use cases:
(1) Creating a link from hyperlinked spreadsheet cell contents
- The desired behavior is that the destination link retains the hyperlink.
- The observed behavior is that the destination link is not hyperlinked.
- An example use case is that we are building two reports which will provide references to information publicly disclosed on our website. The desire is to have these references actually link to the locations instead of only providing a written-out URL. The details of each reference are to be sourced in a single spreadsheet, and then linked into the final report documents.
(2) Creating a (single) source link from document text which contains a portion of hyperlinked text
- The desired behavior is that destination links retains the embedded hyperlink.
- The observed behavior is that when attempting to create a source link from a section of text that includes hyperlinked text, multiple source links are created but not including the hyperlinked text. When one tries to explicitly create a link from the hyperlinked text only, the error message "Source links cannot be created on existing links or hyperlinks" is displayed.
- An example use case is providing a standard informational page at the end of documents that includes hyperlinks to our website and other locations and that can be re-used among multiple documents but maintained centrally.
This is sort of the opposite of the scenarios described in Ability to hyperlink a link. However, it is related: in the above situations, simply hyperlinking the destination link manually is not a workaround, since Workiva will not allow the destination links to be hyperlinked. Hence linking, a key feature of Wdesk, is basically unusable in conjunction with hyperlinks.
If we've misunderstood or there is a solution/workaround, please let us know.

Hi Andrew,
You're correct that these scenarios are not possible since Workiva doesn't currently support hyperlinking in links. We do have planned improvements to allow hyperlinking in links, but there isn't a specific timeline for that release at this time.
I'll add you to the feature request to let our product team know your interest and so that you can receive updates as this work moves forward.
Thank you!
1Thanks for the reply Liz Walters. For additional context, we have a team that produced the initial version of a report as a Wdesk Document using links to source data, but they have since exported that document to Microsoft Word to finish the reporting cycle there because they can hyperlink the content in Word. So it feels like a major lose-lose-lose and inefficiency without having this feature.
