I am terribly behind at updating this post on progress here. Lemme catch ya'll up.

Folder Permissions were released and made generally available, so no beta is needed to access them. Here's a Help article on Managing Folder permissions.

They currently do not have "inheritance", meaning setting the folder permission does NOT change the permission of the contents inside it. However, there are a few caveats:

    • the folder's permission does impact if a user can see a file from Home or not, meaning if someone had no permission to a folder, they would not see the file though it could be found via search, assuming they had permission to it
    • if you create a file from within a folder, it will assume the permission of the folder

The feature for Folder permission with inheritance is being pursued and if you're interested, just let me know and I can get you linked up to that body of work.

Thanks for your patience and give us a holler if you have any questions. Cheers!

    Hi Stephanie!

Yes, Folder permissions is most certainly on the roadmap for our Product Team to implement. Currently we are targeting late August, if not sooner. I've shared your input with our Product Team too, and attached your request to the ongoing ticket so you can follow along here:https://support.workiva.com/hc/en-us/requests.

In the meantime, give me a holler if you have any questions or need anything else. Keep staying awesome, and have a stellar weekend.

Hi, we are anxiously awaiting this feature to apply permissions to folders within the 'Files' area. Can you please provide an updated ETA on it's deployment? Thanks! Jeff

    Hi Jeff!

Well snap, I see you just posted a new question of this ilk and realize I didn't get back to you on here all those days ago. My apologies there. I'll update you here, and on your post as well.

Do to some competing priorities, folder level permissions did get pushed back from an August timeline to a September one. This will also roll out in phases based on account setup, but you should start seeing this option next month. Thanks for your patience and chat with you soon!

I'm also interested in this feature. Would the permissions work the same as they do in projects? I'm confused about the original question above, if we set permissions for a folder as none but the user has editor permissions on a document in that folder, would they not be able to edit/view the file? That would be different than how projects behave now.

I am interested in this feature too. Looking forward to the implementation!

Mike is there functionality at this point to "inherit" or "disinherit" permissions at the folder level? If this in in beta, would be interested in learning how to get into that program. Currently, the lack of ability to choose if permissions are inherited to files or not leaves a considerable security hole and requires a significant time investment in managing permissions from an operational perspective. Thanks!

    Hi Julia!

This is a bit of a yes and no on this. True Folder Inheritance is not yet there, in that if you move content to or from the folder it alters the permission of the file. What does exist is if you create a file in a Folder that it does inherit the permission of that location. But it does not change if you move it. Also, if you have content in Folder that is restrictive in permission, it does limit what people see in Home, though the file can be still found through search.

That said, true folder inheritance as mentioned above is planned to be done and I'm happy to add you there. Let me know if you have any follow-ups on the above or have questions for me.

    Cheers!
